Impulse Sealer or Vacuum Sealer?

Is there any difference in using an Impulse Sealer or a Vacuum Sealer (Food Saver)? If so, what are the main differences? In proceeding with the spawn bag tek does it matter if you use an impulse sealer or vacuum sealer to seal the spawn bags?

I've never done it but I would speculate that an impulse sealer is used as it is easier to maneuver and quicker to seal than a vacuum sealer. Most vacuum sealers have a seal option where it doesn't vacuum it first and just seals it so I suppose that would work but would just be awkward and slow you down. Even if the vacuum was still on there should still be a filter on the bag that would prevent a vacuum seal from forming. I think the name of the game would be to seal it quickly to keep the inside of the bag sterile which seems easier with an impulse sealer.

dang!! cant review the results till 2010? crazyness.... its ok though newbie mistake ..... anyways a foodsaver works fine.... the air vaccum isnt used on those unless you flip up this little thing and insert the bag into it ..... just lay it across the strip and close it and press the button.... wait 10 seconds and carefully remove .... the impulse sealer is just a slightly thicker seal but it all works .... i seal bags before pc'ing too .... mine do well like that.... seems like normal filter patch bags too.... just make sure you let the pc pressure drop all the way on its own before you open it or the bags will swell up real fast and bust..... goodluck .... now gimme a good rating for that killer advice

An impulse sealer will only seal. A vacuum sealer will vacuum pack and/or seal.
An impulse sealer's seal is made from a flat piece of metal is usually 2-3mm wide. You can also seal just about any lenth bag (not width), anywhere along that length.
A vacuum sealer's seal is made from a thin wire. You can only seal the last 1" of a bag.

I have no impulse and have only used filter patch spawns for one grow and I fruited it in vitro look forward to putting the rest of them to good use one of these days but to answer you question I would say impulse sealer, save the food saver thing for storage of your mushrooms once they are cracker dry

i think a vacuum sealer would crush all your cracker dry mushrooms, because i suck the air out of the bag somttimes and i hear cracking and crunching.

if he's doing spawn bags thats all he needs to seal ..... the top of it..... what would he need to geeter on the side of it for? mine works great... the seal mark isnt as thick as an impulse but is seals it up just fine.... i like it.... alot

You can get a small rubber maid box, drill holes in it, put that in bag and shrooms will not be crushed.

that kinda defeats the purpose ..... if he does that there is still gonna be air in the bag inside the box of shrooms.... might as well use a ziplock if thats the case.... besides sealing them up isnt gonna pulverize them.... you're gonna be able to tell they're shrooms ......

He asked about spawn bags, not storage bags.
The last thing you want is no air in a spawn bag. Use an impulse sealer or do what I do which is to use steel tie wire to hold the bag closed. RR

With some vacuum sealers you can get an attachement that will vacuum seal widemouth jars. It will suck all the air out of it and seal it with a regular canning lid. This would keep them stored in a vacuum and keep them from getting crushed.
