LC from print - putting the whole print in

I had a small, faint print which I wanted to make LC out of. Instead of trying to scrape spores from it into the LC, I cut off a piece and put it into the LC. So there's a bit of paper with spores on floating around in the LC.

7 days later one of the 2 LCs I did like that I can't tell if there's growth or not and the other I can't see any growth at all. Is there any reason why this method wouldn't work? I can see that the chance of contamination could increase. But I can't see why spores on paper would have any trouble germinating when soaked in honey water.

Has anyone tried this?

Seven days is not that long for spores, depending on temps and the actual LC. Wait a few more days before you start to worry. At least you'd know if you had contams by now, so that's good.

ive been asking alot about this latley too. (not putting paper in the lc) but jus putting spores off a print directly instead of making a syringe. and yes the contam rate is higher but if its done in a glove box under sterile conditions there is no reason why that shouldnt work. they say around 2 weeks is when you should start seeing growth.

This method has worked for me before, the only issue is if the print and paper truly is sterile, excluding the spores of the mushroom of course

2 weeks is a long time to only "start" seeing growth. I did another LC at the same time with a dark print on foil where there was no problem scraping off spores and had clearly visible growth in 5 days.

I recently started some LC from a syringe- hydrated spores- and it took a week to see anything, and after ten days there isn't much. Every strain, and every mushroom, is different.


Hang on, I'll go check it again... ok. Inoc on 8/20, today is 8/31. Eleven days, and it's just now got enough growth that I might be able to use it on jars, probably better to wait a few more days. And again, that's from already-hydrated spores. So you aren't that far out.

Now, start a batch of LC using mycelium, and watch it explode. Either a few drops of another LC, or some other source. Blammo!
