nothing like the farmers market
    #7332543 -

I seriously feel so good when I buy my produce at the farmers market. I get to meet the people that grew the food and buy food grown locally.
I get to ask people about things I've never tried before. I got my first egg plant there, and today I bought some okra to try out. Plus, I feel so uplifted somehow when I go. I wish it was open all year.

That was one of the ways the guy suggested to cook it. He also said it was good in stir fry, used in gumbo, and also worked as a thickening agent. Seriously, Kroger would have never told me that.

oh yeah, the personal experience you get shopping at the farmer's market is unbeatable. i regret that i don't do it more often.

but seriously... if you fry up some okra, i'm so just gonna show up. i don't even know what state you live in, but you'll have a ninja peering in your kitchen window. i've got a hardcore hankering for it now.

Okra makes everything slimy. lol

If you like eggplant try and look up some of the mediterranean recipes for the stuff. It's great in Taboule or fried up with tomatoes or stuffed with minced meat but be careful, eggplant can suck up it's own weight in oil when frying it and since it really should be cooked with olive oil, it can get expensive.

It was one of the ancient Romans favourite dishes.

I love the farmer's market. I do about 85% of my shopping there, even in the winter when I'm stuck eating nothing but kale and root vegetables. It's worth it though, for the connection to the farmers that you mentioned and buying produce in season is the best and cheapest.

This morning I got lemon cucumbers, which are round and yellow; an old fashioned zucchini cultivar that has yellow stripes and tastes nutty; a dozen eggs from a chicken breed called aruacana that lays light blue eggs; fresh goat cheese; chives; wild caught flounder fillets; heirloom tomatoes; corn and bread, all for $30.

I know!
I started limiting how much money I bring to keep from buying more than we can eat because everything is so pretty and I always want to try new varieties of produce. Here in nyc, the farmers are really into one-upping each other with rare and beautiful vegetables so there's always something crazy to try--like purple carrots or almost-black tomatoes that are maroon on the inside.

I'm glad some other folks love this as much as I do.
And I am going to fry up some okra later, and ninjas are totally welcome, and pirates too.
There's a guy that's been showing up lately that has sausage, meat and jerky all preservative free. I got some for my dad. When I finally give it to him, he's going to love it.

Don't wait too long, what with the lack of preservatives and all!

He had it frozen when I bought it.  He actually had a crazy set up with tons of coolers and ice packs.  It was solid when I bought it, so I think it will be okay for a little while in the freezer.

Thanks for looking out though

mmmm, farmers market. I'm gonna go to my neighborhood one tomorrow morning before work and get me a bunch more tomaters, nectarines, apples, a big bag of spinach, maybe a few carrots, and a big jug of mead.
