New virtual-reality experiments show the brain can be tricked into believing it's outside the body, lending credence to the strange claims of some patients and shedding light on how the brain might generate its "self-image."

“We have decades of intense research on visual perception, but not very much yet on body perception," said Henrik Ehrsson of University College London.

He is also watching a plastic rod moving toward a location just below the camera, while his real chest is simultaneously touched in the corresponding spot. The subject typically felt as if he was being poked in the chest while he was outside his body."

I don't know if I don't get the experiment or if it is pure bullshit.

They hit you with a bar while they show you another with VR goggles following the same movement as the first. What's the point if one thinks he's hit with the one he sees? It's seems obvious for me.

I induce it myself.

The imagination is extremely powerful.

All you have to do is believe. Imagine how you'd look if your were looking back on yourself - I do this with my eyes open, sometimes when walking down the street etc
Believe you are looking back at yourself - eventually it becomes the reality and you have induced a type of OBE.

We can play music in our heads and hear it just like the real thing, we can experience any drug state, just through our imagination and belief.

Most people don't realise or do this stuff though, everybody in todays age is looking for an external thing to effect the internal - not realising that there is only internal.

This is why the placebo effect is so strong!
