im not a mod but i think we could ditch a few of those sticky threads and make this one sticky. i think its fairly important, we have a shroomerite MIA in the disaster....

We have several members MIA. DSG, hemostats, Urb (he lived about 30 miles from these guys,) and of course, cortez.

Bump.

I was just reading through some of my old posts and this one really got to me. especially with the two year anniversary of Katrina approaching. Reading through the whole thread, the progress of the events that occurred...

One thing I can say; I wish I wouldn't have stayed. Although I was 30+ miles north of New Orleans, the weeks after the storm were unbelievably difficult. Weeks without power, drinkable water, communication, and gas. When you don't have these vital human needs, you really come to realize how important they are. Roads were unnavigable due to the innumerable downed trees. The total lack of communication spawned innumerable rumors of the situation outside of the immediate area that only heightened the uncertainty of the future.

With all the horrible things that happened in New Orleans; the Super Dome and Convention Center, the Danziger Bridge, the Memorial Hospital fiasco, the events on the North Shore of Louisiana seem like child's play, but experiencing them first hand, I am unable to minimize the disaster that we experienced.

I said that I wish I didn't stay, but I by being there during the storm, the power of the winds tearing 200 foot trees out of the ground by their roots is indescribable. I had never been so amazed and terrified before and I doubt I will again.

But even compared to the awesome power nature, it wasn't the 18 hours of wind and rain that will make me evacutate next time a major hurricane threatens my city, it is the aftermath that I still feel uneasy thinking and talking about.

Nature was awesome and terrifying that day, but the two weeks after the storm were just... well, I hope I never have to go though that again.

Keep us in your thoughts, the aftermath of the Storm hasn't passed, even 2 years later.

Just a matter of time before another one of those takes out half the state of Florida. What changes have been made in the evacuation/relief system since Katrina? Anyone know?
