first grow...all set but still have questions..
    #7275028 -

i have a rubbermaid tub,a big bag of perlite and a big bag of vermiculite and organic brown rice flour and i have a sprayer and tinfoil and masking tape and a big vegetable steamer pot. all the stuff for pf tek. but...i was planning on using half pints like suggested, but the local store only carried pint size widemouth tapered side ball jars and i got a 12 pack. i guess i will use 6 the first time...so that means i will have to use 1/2 cup of organic brown rice flour, 1 cup of vermiculite , and 120 mL of water per 1 pint jar...right? all you veterans, help me out. also, what should i do to keep the inside of my rubbermaid tub humid and moist during fruiting? i plan to air it out 3 times a day, but i don't know how i will keep it humid. should i wet the 1/4 inch of perlite that the cakes will be on and spray the inside walls? should i also try to crack the lid and spray, or what?

any advice is much appreciated =)

also, how many cc's of spore per jar, and where should i keep them during incubation...in the tub with the lid on? temp under 70?

I am not positive that airing out the container is necessary, but if so, are you making sure to air it out in a sterile environment? if not, bacterial intruders will set in. keep an eye out for pink spots and remove these with flame sterilized killed utensils. if the substrate is moist, the chamber will remain humid if the lid is closed. if you need to mist, i suggest disinfecting the spray nozzle with alcohol before doing so. the number of spores per jar does not have be precise

okay...after reading more i think ill only spray once a day-2 days. but since my jars are pint not half pint and pf tek is geared towards half pintand suggests 1 cc...shouldn't i use 2 ccs per jar?..just a thought...

that would probably be a good idea in order to maximize use of space and materials. again, it doesn't have to be precise.

I made the mistake of getting finely ground Vermiculite during my first PF Tek, and using the given recipe for the substrate, there was WAY too much water and I over-saturated my jars.

If you do have finely ground vermiculite, use less water. Just eye it out. Try to make your substrate as porous as possible so the Mycelium can get enough air flow, but will still cake. Just eye it out. Add a little bit of water at a time until desired results occur.

I suggest getting a bottle of Lysol, a dust mask, and some gloves and spraying down a small enclosed area before doing any work on your jars. Even as you're making your substrate before you put your jars in your Pressure Cooker.

Also get some Rubbing Alcohol to wipe down pretty much everything you plan on using.

Just take everything into consideration, take your time, and enjoy every minute of it. This is a very addicting hobby.

Sterility is key.

so wait..i just want my substrate to be moist? so its not watery but still holds shape? my vermiculite is fine to medium size with some larger pieces throughout. is 120 mL really too much for a pint jar?

hey brother a month ago i just did the exact same thing as u. I used the simple cubensis growing tek (revised pf tek almost identical). The answer is YES double all ingredients, except the spores. The reason for this is money, it is more of an option to double the dosage of spores rather than a necessity. If you can afford to use 2 syringes like did i would highly recommend it and say go for it. See i have some jars that are colonizing super fast and like 3 that lagged behind cuz i didnt put as much spore solution in em. I used 2 syringes for 12 jars and that was sufficient for 1 pints. 1 full syringe for 6 should be perfect thats roughly 1.5ccs per jar. i also made the mistake of not inoculating on the outside of the jars which i think slightly slowed down colonization but it worked all the same. but yes follow the recipe double for half pints.

as far as the fruiting chamber goes, just make a shitload of holes on all 6 sides of the chamber. That way you shouldnt have to air out so much but if you live in a relatively humid area it will present no problem, if you live in a dry area when you go to fan out your FC just mist after you fan out and youll be fine. Make sure u mist after u fan out though so it doesnt cancel itself out.

hope some of that helps, peace.

i was looking at just putting an aquarium bubble stone in water hooked up to an air pump outside the tub. this is a link to what im talking about...
humidity solution

would that work? it sounds like a nice way to go..but i already have a spray bottle, so if i have to ill just air once a day and spray heavily after airing it out, but do i really need to worry about drip from condensation?

If u have perlite then u dont have to worry about humidity. As long as u have the correct amount of perlite in ur chamber with enough water, the perlite will keep the himidity inside ur box high enough.

If ur worried about himidiity then get a hydrometer that will tell u (make sure its moisture proof if its digital, or just get an anologue one)

If read countless times that perlite just seems to do such a better job than any other methods (fish tank bubblers, sonic humidifiers etc seem to hard to get setup right and sometimes just dont even get close to 95%)

For the beginer, perlite will do fine and keep the lid on ur teranium.

thanks! but is 1/4 inch under the cakes enough?

but i still need to air out because of CO2 exchange, right?

Well, first of all I dont believe starting with the pftek is the easiest way to go. And if you are using pint jars, it will be much more difficult to be successful with (BRF)Brown Rice Flour. Wild Bird Seed or Rye would be a better alley for you to explore in this case.

I also suggest you concentrate on getting the jars colonized before buying your equipment for the fruiting chamber, you have a long way to go until that stage.

And for your question as to how many CCs of spore solution per jar, you can put as much or as little as you want, but I would suggest you do a little research on liquid cultures. That way if you screw up your jars, you will still have Mycelium left in the Liquid Culture...its like life insurance for your baby mushies...

1/4 inch?? Hell no!

I use 4-5 inches of perlite... that's what RogerRabbit recommends. And yes you need to air it out a few times daily. Just fan it out with the lid. I fan mine about 5 times every day, depending on how much I'm at home.

I assume you are aware you need to soak the perlite beforehand so that it takes on water. This water evaporates over time and humidifies the chamber.

Search for "Let's Grow Mushrooms" on youtube and watch all four parts of that video.

And don't rest the cakes directly on the perlite. Use jar lids or aluminum foil (I've even seen people use CDs!)

And neobean is right... fruiting is a ways off; your first goal is to get those jars colonized. Most people seem to use about 1cc per jar (more often 10ccs per 12 jars.)

Pint jars will take a long time to colonize (a lot longer than it would probably take to go out and find some 1/2 pints), but you should be okay.

Your substrate recipe sounds right to me.

i will take ur advice and get the stuff to make up some cultures, i really want to get some more jars on the go, but dont want to have to agonizing waiting for the first signs of myc.

I might go the petri dish method and inoculate that, then take cutings of the myc to start other batches. 1 grow bag and 1 jar could leave me with nothing and weeks of wasted waiting.

yeah...im still gonna use BRF and verm cause the rye tek looks a lot harder...and i know that people successfully grow from pint cakes of BRF/verm all the time. And since i can, i'm going to use 2ccs per jar. and about the 1/4 inch perlite thing...i was really stoned when writing that and didnt take into account that 1/4 inch is nothing...so im gonna go with 4 inches. but even though im gonna stick to brf, i want to know why rye or bird seed would be better. does it colonize faster? is it better for the mycelium? i dont see why those methods would be better just because i have pint jars...

Mycelium will colonize WBS or Rye 1 pint jars way faster...and your yield in the end will be higher as well.
And although they seem more complicated, you should still start there as the BRF methods are outdated.

fine...im going to go get 1/2 pints and do my brf method since i have all the stuff. then ill get WBS or rye for the next grow and ill use the pint jars. i cant just ignore all the stuff i already bought, but i will definitely attempt using rye in my pints later.
