Dexter's thoughts on the 'Lowryder' strain
    #6967887 -

Well, this started off as a PM to someone, but i figure with the growery on its way, and all the questions about lowryder, i might as well just adapt the PM into a (hopefully) useful post.

I think recommending lowryder to anyone to grow indoors, is a bad move.

First let me start off by saying that my first grow was lowryder. I was sucked into purchasing the strain, by the fast harvesting time, the small space required to grow, and in all honesty, the novelty of a 'new stabilized trait' in MJ genetics.
(I had a few growlogs here, but because of security issues, i asked that they be removed.)
While i did not regret my indoor lowryder grow, I would not recommend anyone getting lowryder for the same purpose. The only way i would condone the purchase would be for someone to grow outdoors, and even then, only in extremely northern or southern latitudes.

Lowryder has lots of faults, but no one ever brings up the legitimate ones. First, lets look at who lowryder is marketed too... NEWBS. People who have no previous experience cultivating, and people looking for the fastest harvest possible. Secondly, and biggest issue, is that lowryder can not (in practical terms) be saved as a clone. This is a 'non-starter' issue for me. Cloning is so simple, and if keeping even one 'mother' plant indoors is possible, lowryder is not for you. Making a newb wait an extra week, or three, to sex/flower a plant & learn how to clone, is worth the extra effort. Cloning is so easy, and experimenting and grasping the knowledge, will allow you to never purchase the same genetics twice, and set you up for perpetual harvesting.

One perceived thought, and one reason lowryder gets a bad name is potency. Most think lowryder is below avg potency, but i never thought so. Lowryder, unlike 95% of other strains, is not dominated by indica genetics. So you cannot expect to get super baked/stoned, from a plant without that type of genetic background. I got really high off of my lowryder, and none of my friends noticed a lack of potency. The effects did only lasted 2 hours, but that is not necessarily a bad trait. The strain 'fumar con dios', comes to mind, as a similar 'day smoke'. That strain is complemented by 'fumar con noche', the night time stone/baked strain. Also, lets take into account the large number of first time growers, who are reporting on potency. Who really can do the best job, the first time?

These are enough issues to make lowryder an irrelevant novelty IMHO. Once you can take clones, you can flower plants of any size. even smaller than lowryder! Space is not really an issue, because training plants is easy, and a very effective way to get the most out of each individual plant. Most plants will show sex after 4-6 weeks, and that is only 1-3 weeks faster than lowryder. Preserving genetics is very important thing to a grower, and impossible asexually with lowryder. Lowryder should be avoided. It's like riding a bicycle from NYC to Los Angels, cause you didn't want to wait 3 hours at airport security.

I'm growing lowryder 2s outdoors because of security issues.
I'm glad I bypassed the original lowryder strain.
Yep, indoors is not an option, so I'll go with what I can.
It's good to know that the high can be pretty interesting.

they both have the same faults.

There is no reason to be glad you got one vs the other.

Thanks for the info tho, I'm still getting all my info in for my first grow, but I'm pretty sure I'd go with Durban Poison already, I can't think of any strain I want to grow better, not even Amnesia Haze which is my favourite high.

Good write up. I definately agree with the whole novelty aspect.

I never have but If I'd only ever grown lowrider, I'd have spent a few thousand dollars on seeds in the last few years, cloning has reduced that cost to maybe $150.

Lowrider makes no sense.

Most is true but I will say that I do believe it's a low potency plant. The number of plants I've seen grown numbers in the thousands easily. First off if your gonna go with a auto flowering strain you better damn well know it's not gonna be cloned.

Now why is it low potency? Well if you cross strains that are high in thc with a strain that is pretty much good for nothing but the auto flowering trait and nothing else it is gonna dilute the potency strain no matter how good a breeder you are,

magash, didnt you have a SoG going? i think you might have said it was chronic. Can any freshly rooted strain be forced into flower and be force to stay small like the lowryders?

Yes when done from clone. No matter how small a clone is it thinks it is still the same age as the mother plant or grows like a plant that age. With clones you can flower them as soon as they root.

With Lowryder it's gonna finish from seed in 8 to 10 weeks no matter what you do.

So you can just veg a mother plant for a long time and then clone it and SOG those? If I understand correctly this woul give great yields in not too long a time and with less seed spenditure?

That's the point baby. :getstoned::potleaf:

Plus one room of mothers can provide cuttings for several rooms like
so every 8 weeks you harvest from the same group of mothers. If you have a flowering space large enough to keep plants at different stages you can harvest every week.

Awesome, looks like I found my answer after weeks of planning my first grow! Would you say Durban Poison would do well on a square meter, 400w HPS, two meter tall grow kit?

Tek me up baby, tek me up

ok... but your not understanding my point.

autoflowering is not desirable trait, unless you live just near the arctic circle. 10 years be damned.

Hell, personally, i think the longer you veg a plant, the better. It is just a matter of patience, which always runs out.

Never grew Lowryder, but I have grown, cloned, budded, and smoked Masterlow, a Lowryder hybrid by breeder Mdanzig.

As potent and tasty as weed you buy in many/most A'dam smoke cafes.

I've gotten it to grow to one meter high, and have taken clones which survived, aand taken clones off off that plant, too. Didn't need to take it any further than that, as I made my own seeds, rather than buy more.

The ultimate benefit of Masterlow and autoflowering strains? You don't have to grow what you ain't gonna smoke, like branches and stem.

I haven't tried the Bluestreak they have now, or the "lowsnow" cross, but if they're any more potent than the Masterlow, it would have to be strong stuff.

BTW, I've smoked most of the strains now out there, at least the ones you'd buy in A'dam, and a lot of the more popular ones people grow, and I've NEVER been stoned for more than two hours.

If there is a negative to growing autoflower plants like Masterlow, please let me know what, exactly, you imagine it to be.

I've grown lowryder, it blows.

Potency sucks, yeild sucks, flavor sucks, aroma sucks, lowryder sucks!

Only reason i grew it cause i got it free from a friend.

You can grow any plant, clone it and then flower that clone at any height. Whether its 6 feet or 6 inches. Any plant can be grown in the manner lowryder is grown. And be much much better.
