Can mycelium colonize and fruit on perlite?
    #725324 - 07/05/02 06:13 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

i was wondering if anybody has had their mycelium start to cover the area around the cakes, looking like it is actually growing on the perlite. that is what it seems to be doing w/ me. and what's more, 5 pins have appeared! i don't think they are going to be living, since i don't see how they can get the nutrients or what not that they need, except for water. has this happened to anyone else? not that i am complaining, you understand. i just find it to be odd, and something i was not expecting. i need a digital camera....

sure.. it happens sometimes.. especially if u don't keep a clean terrarium or put your cakes directly on top of the perlite..

It's not totally uncommon. You can see it clearly in many pictures of cakes on geolite. The myclium is basically sending out collectors to sap up some water from your perlite. This is a good thing.
