Why Ron Paul Cannot Be President
    #7243778 -

John Derbyshire who is, admittedly, a conservative, has a mostly positive piece about the Paul phenomenon at National Review Online where he tries to figure out why more conservatives aren’t supporting Ron Paul. In the process, he comes up with the reason that Ron Paul cannot be President:

"If Washington, D.C. were the drowsy southern town that Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge rode into, Ron Paul would have a chance. Washington’s not like that nowadays, though. It is a vast megalopolis, every nook and cranny stuffed with lobbyists, lawyers, and a hundred thousand species of tax-eater. The sleepy old boulevards of the 1920s are now shadowed between great glittering ziggurats of glass and marble, where millions of administrative assistants to the Department of Administrative Assistance toil away at sending memos to each other.

Few of these laborers in the vineyards of government do anything useful. (In my experience — I used to have to deal with them — few do anything much at all.) Some of what they do is actually harmful to the nation. On the whole, though, we have settled in with this system. We are used to it. It’s not going away, absent a revolution; and conservatives are — duh! — not, by temperament, revolutionaries.

Imagine, for example, President Ron II trying to push his bill to abolish the IRS through Congress. Congress! — whose members eat, drink, breathe and live for the wrinkles they can add to the tax code on behalf of their favored interest groups! Or imagine him trying to kick the U.N. parasites out of our country. Think of the howls of outrage on behalf of suffering humanity from all the lefty academics, MSM bleeding hearts, love-the-world flower children, Eleanor Roosevelt worshippers, and bureaucratic globalizers!

Ain’t gonna happen. It was, after all, a conservative who said that politics is the art of the possible. Ron Paul is not possible. His candidacy belongs to the realm of dreams, not practical politics. But, oh, what sweet dreams!"

This is one of the things that bothers me about the people afraid of Paul "well he'll get rid of FEMA- He'll repeal foodstamps". Ron Paul doesn't make the law if president, congress does. About the only thing paul can do is get us out of iraq, modify our foreign policy, and push for change (though the biggest effect of a Paul win would be the perception

edit: he could also nominate judges and direct the actions of the US Attorneys..

"the biggest effect of a Paul win would be the perception"

and maybe he could get the US troops in 130 different countries home too!

I have never understood how "conservative small government” and policing the the fucking world go together.....

"Why Ron Paul Cannot Be President"

because I would vote for him. also, being backed by Alex Jones is a sure sign of not having a chance in hell. Not because of the endorsement itself, but because the endorsement reflects core values, which are in polar opposition to the current state of things.

Why Ron Paul Should Be President. Ron Paul wins the election and then takes his advise from Economist and we're good to go.

You know what's funny is that the Ron Paul movement actually believes he might get the GOP's nomination. Realistically, they're getting excited over nothing.

What's exciting is that a candidate from a major party is willing to support good ideas that go deeply against the grain- and a congressman at that.

The same reason I vote for the libertarians in my state elections is why people supportive of Paul's ideas should be excited... the perception of viability garners credibility, which creates media coverage, which wins the sheep over to thinking "well maybe he has a point".

Paul, in my opinion, seems to have created an awfull lot of buzz for a candidate without major funding or the strong support of a major party (think the republicans give two shits about him?)

He has definitely helped get his view across and I tend to agree with most of them. I don't think he has a snowballs chance in hell of winning but he has made a visible impact. I will vote for him if given the chance.

I'm an optimist and a huge Ron Paul supporter. The fact of the matter is that I agree with almost everything that comes out of his mouth. In my opinion he is the BEST candidate, and i will vote for him in the primaries and get as many people as possible to know about him (I wear a "who is Ron Paul?" button at work and convert people all day.)

So i'm not going to vote for anyone because I think they're more likely to win, i think that kind of logic has gotten the country in the fucked up state it's in now. So i'm going to support and vote for the candidate that is most in line with my ideas/values, nothing else matters! why would any thing else matter? why would i vote for anyone else?

Are you trying to convince others or yourself?

I think this election year I have seen how much of a coward many americans truly are. Fear of voting for a canidate because "he will lose". I have heard time and time again sayings like "he is a great guy, and id love to vote for him, but he just doesnt stand a chance"...wtf?

"Why Ron Paul Cannot Be President "

Because people keep telling each other that it just can't happen, and therefore convince themselves and others to not vote for him, as thoroughly stupid and self-defeating as that is.

There is no reason why Paul could not be President, apart from people abandoning their support of him in their pessimism.

i could see ron paul gaining enough support to take the white house (crosses fingers). the question them becomes "what will the elites do about it?".

he is obviously not of their ilk.

You sound so young and naive...Did you just turn 18? After your heart is broken during primary elections a few times you will be bitching right alongside the rest of us about how the best candidates don't stand a chance. That much I can guarantee.

You assumptions are wrong, my voting record would prove that, but...

So after being let down you've become a part of the problem? Like I said, "There is no reason why Paul could not be President, apart from people abandoning their support of him in their pessimism."
