Simpler than anything with electrical/ electronic parts, and less work than manual fanning... I dunno. Like I said, I'm willing to give it a try. If you found a tub with ridges on the bottom (lots of them do) it would give you the vent space.

Edit- you'd still need a drip tray, though.

A ridge on the bottom wouldn't do anything.

The holes have to have access to open air. Even with a ridge, the air there would be enclosed and still, and thus useless to FAE. All I'm saying is that lateral holes are a great idea, but the bottom, that's just silly.

But hey, to each their own.

I meant to have the holes between the ridges, not on them.

Maybe better would be to have lots of little side holes along the bottom? I don't know. You're right about the 'lot of work' part, though. I'll post some more after I try it- won't be today.

Lol if you don't have bottom holes it will defeat the purpose of automatically providing Fae.If well drained perlite is placed in the fc it will not leak i heavily mist as well and have never seen a leak ever.It should be placed on blocks to expose the bottom holes this can be easily done with plastic spacers or PVC wrack that you can make for cheap.

Unless you happen to live in a convection oven, there's not that much vertical airflow in a household. Lateral holes are going to be providing the majority of the benefit here. If you're getting insufficient FAE from lateral holes, you can just expand the holes, or add new ones... it makes more sense than lifting the FC up and poking holes in the bottom, for chrissakes.

But whatever, as I said, it's up to the individual. People are going to be irrational and superstitious about their grows, it's the nature of the hobby.

Lol if you dont have holes on the bottom then the whole point of the fc has failed then you will have to fan several times a day.

The theory of operation I designed the system on is that cold air has a higher pressure than warm air, due to the molecules being closer together. Since air currents always flow from high pressure to low, the air that surrounds the cool perlite is wicked up into the warmer air in the terrarium that is heated by the substrates and/or the lighting. The holes in the bottom of the terrarium feed more air in, which then passes through the perlite, being humidified as it does. The end result is a self circulating auto FAE system that provides both fresh air and humidity at the same time.

I originally worked with a similar system when I was working on the Alaska pipeline construction project in the early 1970's. The support structures that hold the pipeline above ground as it passes over the tundra are filled with ammonia that uses the cold ground to circulate the ammonia through an expansion valve, to the warmer air above, thus making a self-contained refrigeration system that uses no electricity to keep the ground around the supports frozen solid, even in summer. By keeping the ground frozen all year, they don't shift as much, which would rupture the pipeline. The terrarium with holes in all six sides is simply an adaptation of that technology for our use.

I'm not saying the holes in the base are 100% useless, but it's not the keystone of a passive FAE setup. They're going to be equally or (more likely) less effective, per hole, than the holes made on the sides.

You get more FAE from lateral holes than from holes in the base because there is going to be natural airflow in any given room your FC is in. You can get still more FAE from your lateral holes by expanding them or adding more. I've done it, and yes, it works without fanning (misting is still necessary, as always).

Adding "lol" to the beginning of a sentence doesn't make your statements obvious or automatically correct, despite what you seem to think.

I hate to correct something from RR because he knows a hell of a lot more than I do about a lot of things relating to cultivation, but it's based on bad physics. Cool air is more dense and thus sinks. You're not going to get air flowing up through your perlite and into the FC due to a heat difference.

You WILL get some flowing upward by happenstance, but it's not enough to make or break the practicality of simply fitting holes in order to provide FAE. It doesn't matter where the holes are, as long as they aren't all on the same side. Crossflow is what makes this work, not some kind of magic backwards-convection. If cool air created by evaporation from the perlite somehow drew air in through the bottom and pushed it out the top of the FC, this would work great--but that's not going to happen. Air is, if anything, going to be sucked downward by this process, taking humidified air out the bottom at a greater rate than it goes upward from drafts.

You dont have to be insulting i was proving a point that you obviously dont understand look up cold air/warm air pressure.
