First FC: what do I NEED?

With fanning and misting, will this suffice? It'll be tight with casings, so I figure I can do w/out perlite or geolite. I know I should have holes for air exchange, but I don't have polyfil and would rather hook this up w/out another shopping trip. Would holes taped over with Tyvek work? Anything else I'm missing or any glaring errors?

drill a whole bunch of holes in it, and it will be your first/last FC.

That guy in the video seems not concerned about contams at all--will my casings be okay in there if I just punch a lot of little holes all over?

Re: perlite, won't my verm/coir casings do the humidifying as long as I keep them misted? They're going to be edge to edge in there.

EDIT: and would it stun growth at all if I had to pull them out for a couple minutes to add perlite later?

Dude in video is RogerRabbit, so you can pretty much run with what he says.

Re:perlite : i reckon, but don't know how high it will keep the humidity. you don't want the casings wall to wall tho, cuz moisture will drip right down the wall into the casing.

And, as far as pulling them, you can put a piece of wax paper over the casing to retain humidity if you need to pull it out for a minute.

nah, the holes allow for the FAE, which is the point of fanning.

Doesnt the perlite fall out through the bottom holes?

You still need to fan because the holes dont get the c02 out well it doesnt get out most of it anyway.I only fan and mist 2 times daily with that setup.

Holes in the bottom?

Don't put them in the very bottom, or your FC will leak...

I was confused too, but watch the video. RR says all six sides. You could put some mesh in the bottom, if it bugs you.

Any how the perlite becomes "fluffy" (:rockon:) And so it wont fall out and if there isn't too much water, the FC will not leak. Because we strain the perlite...just the holes must be a bit smaller, depending on the size of your perlite...Mine is small :s

I'd be concerned about uncontrolled drainage, not perlite falling out.

At near-100% humidity, there is always some condensation or pooling. You do strain the perlite, but you also mist.

I'm going with figgusfiddus on this one. On my first FC I put holes in all six sides and had water everywhere. Unless you have a tray or something underneath your FC, i'd just leave out the holes on the bottom.

And if you have a tray underneath, you defeat the purpose of the holes on the bottom!

Seems silly all around to me.

You could have it 'above' a tray, like up on some blocks. But try it before you dis the idea- RR is a pretty savvy guy. I'm going to give it a shot.

I don't see it being a rotten idea, bound to burn down your house and make all your shrooms abort for all eternity or anything. It just seems both excessive and difficult to arrange.

I mean, putting an FC up on blocks just so air can somehow go through the perlite as well as flowing laterally?
