wirless router/network problems
    #7218976 -

came home this afternoon to the internet not working. I was able to connect to the network, no problems, but (on firefox) the status at the bottom would not change from 'looking up www...'

I'm using a D-Link wbr-2310 (I've already been told it's fairly crappy)

I tried unplugging and restarting everything. no luck. checked the cable line w/out wireless and it's working fine.

So I reset the modem hoping that would work. Set everything back up through the ip address page (in firefox). Disconnected the laptop from the router (ethernet cable), and tried to reconnect to the network which shows up. All it does is 'waiting on the network to be ready' and occasionally changes from manual to automatic in the background. Cannot connect to the internet at all through wireless.

any help would be appreciated

edit: forgot to mention this has been working fine for almost seven months until today

It sounds like your DNS is set up improperly. Ensure within the router settings that it is pointed to your ISPs DNS servers. Ensure on your system you are pointed to either your router or your ISPs DNS servers. Switch to the oppposite (generally, if your router is not providing it, which is what it sounds like, you need to change from DNS entries pointing at your router to the ISPs DNS servers by IP address).

I went through options and couldn't find a DNS option where I could manually change anything

For the router or your system?

Speaking of, what operating system are you using, anyway? I assume it's windows? If so, generally you have to go into the properties of your network connection, then click on the TCP/IP protocol list item, then click the properties/edit button for THAT, and one of the tabs there should have to do with DNS. Alternatively, check in commandline (start -> run -> cmd) "ipconfig /all" which will display a lot of relevent IP information (which you could paste in here).

uninstall your wireless network card, then reinstall it.
I think that should work judging by what you said.

I know it's definitely not just my wireless card, cause my roommate can't connect to it (well, it says I have connected, but the status is not connected)

Did you try what delta9 suggested with ipconfig /all? And if so, what were the results?

yea, it gave me the dns number, but I went through all the options in the network connections for each adapter and found no place to change dns numbers or that had them listed

What ip address is it showing you?
To configure the network interfaces try this:
Network Connections-> choose your wireless interface and right click and select properties-> scroll down to tcp/ip select properties.
At the bottom you'll see the option for "obtain a DNS address automatically" or "use the following DNS server address". You could enter the DNS address's ipconfig showed you by selecting the later option.

when I do this, the dns server come up as fec0: etc, which I can only enter numbers into the box under tcp/ip properties

You need to paste that information as well, instead of us guessing about it .

At any rate, since it is both you and your roomate, it sounds to me like the router is not processing the DNS properly.  You may need to call your ISP and ask them for the IP addresses of DNS servers to try and input directly into your router.  Refer to your router's manual for information on where and how to do this.

Or your router is not issuing ip's via dhcp correctly, or at all. Is the router configured for dhcp?

ok, well, I'm just now getting around to trying to work on this some more.

I got the network itself back up, but am back to where I was first.

According to properties of the network adapter, DHCP is enabled, however, using ipconfig /all, the option "DHCP Enabled.......:" reads "NO"

I have yet to call my isp requesting DNS addresses to manually enter as I have not had time.

Finally, through the router's setup, the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway are set to 0.0.0.0, the DNS is blank, and the DHCP client is listed as disconnected

also, checking the details under the adapter, the ip address, default gateway, DHCP server, and DNS server address numbers are all the same

(the ip address has two zeroes at the end, but is the same number besides that)

Enable it through the TCP/IP settings as described earlier.
