piano, keyboard, midi controller..

#7214775 - 07/23/07 07:25 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

It has been a long time, but I want to start playing again.

I can't get a stand-up piano as it would cost way too much and be too much of a problem to transport to my third story apartment.

So I've finally settled to accept something electric... and I haven't a clue what I'm looking at.

I would like a 76 at least, preferably 88 key keyboard. Nothing too fancy, but it needs to be weighted... none of those on-off keyboards like I used to bang on as a kid. I would like it to sound as good as possible, but I will not be using it to perform or anything, but I really don't want to shudder when I press a key... BUT I am also not too picky. My main factor is going to be price.

Now, can someone explain if something like this:

is going to make sounds right out of the box? I don't know how the midi interface works at all and what kind of keyboards (I'm lumping anything electronic with keys into this category) come with or without speakers. and if it doesn't, what do I need to make a nice sounding keyboard make sound?

I have a very nice tube guitar amp, but I don't think what I'm looking for is going to just be an amplifier.. probably needs some kind of digital processing first???
