Help me mic up my upright Piano PLZ
    #3831592 - 02/25/05 04:41 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I really want to mic up my upright Piano---No Midi or digital sound comes close to replicating that of a good old analog piano. This thing is from the 60's and has kind of a good honky tonk warm sound to it. I need some recommendations of not only good mics, but something I can get my recordings to tape before I get my studio and DAW up and running. PLZ help. I need a Analog to Digital converter I guess? well atleast later on some type of thru box. Protools LE is wat I am saving money up to invest in.

When i mic a piano in the studio, i use a nice rich or dark mic that is good with low frequencies with a hypercardioid pattern on the left side, pointing about 45 degrees of an angle along the beaters. And the same thing on the right side, but with a bright, high frequency response. This way you have your own "recording crossover" with the horizontal movement of the mics in conjunction with EQ's, and you can also add more dark or bright timbre with riding the levels. Always mic pianos in stereo. Pick the mics that are to your liking if you want a rich, or dark, or bright sound.

Most mics, if they have withstood the test of time, (excluding the D112 myth that it is a good mic) are worth their price. Some of the Blue mics, such as baby bottle, are pretty good for their price.
