Anyone here play the piano/keyboard?
    #2934696 - 07/28/04 12:32 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Well, my parents have been telling me all my life "Oh you should have played the piano!" and recently I've been thinking that they were right. I've always been into music, and good piano is pretty much irresistable. I've got very long fingers too, so I'm thinking that this just might work out for me.

Any of you guys play the piano/keyboard? Maybe some advice? Words for me to think about. It's not like I can just go out and buy a piano, or even a keyboard. These things are expensive items. I'd like to give it a whirl, but, it's going to take some sort of investment I think.

Maybe recommend a keyboard of some kind? Or even a book.

Thanks Shroomerites! You guys always help.

uhh.. I don't play piano..per se, but I've been known to fuck around with them. I'm a musician first and foremost, while guitar and bass are the primary tools, it's always fun to play other things.

Go ahead. Do it. You don't have anything to lose except maybe some money. And there's much more to be gained. It's also interesting to note that keyboards and guitars are layed out the exact same, in that the piano has the same distance between notes and everything as a guitar, only a much longer range and the ability to play many tones at once.

However I don't own any piano or keyboard so I don't have any suggestions for you, sorry.

Yea, I played piano for like a year when I was 8 or so, and just recently (about 6 months ago) bought a keyboard for like 200 bucks. It's a ton of fun to fuck around with, even though I totally suck at it. It's a Yamaha PSR-292, gets the job done, I just wish it went like an octave lower.

I gots me a Yamaha PSR-275... and I enjoy toolin around wit it... gettin semi-decent (ha! :tongue2:).
If yers is anything like mine, Digs, you can change the octave... I do it by pushing the "Function" button til it says "M.Octave" and hit the "-" and "+" buttons.

I was wondering about that actually. Are there keyboards out there that allow you to change the octave quickly enough for it to not be a concern? Say I'm playing along in a song, and then I need to change the octave..I don't want it to be complicated. Can those Yamaha keyboards do anything else worthwhile? Maybe I can get one of those.

On mine you have to hit a button and scroll a wheel pretty fast to change it (it displaces from 1-12 notes, so an octave). You could get good enough to do it pretty fast, I just dont work with it enough I suppose. The keyboard has a good number of bells and whistles that I don't use, it's a really good low end keyboard imo.

You could just get a keyboard that spans multiple octaves.

I played piano for about 9 years starting at age 4, and have since learned a couple other instruments and plenty of music theory.

From experience, piano is the fundamental instrument to understanding and applying music theory and other phenomena of music. It's all laid out in front of you, scales chords whole steps half steps intervals keys... It's so easy on a piano once you see it, as compared to any other instrument IMO.

If you have a huge amount of funds, you can't go wrong with a Korg Triton... but if you don't there are TONS of great keyboards. Weighted keys add a lot to how you play, you'd be surprised. Go to a music store, mess around with ALL of them, see which you like and can afford, then go online and compare prices.

Piano is such a valuable skill in music. It translates to other instruments so easily...

I tried to reply yesterday, but my computer crashed and  :blah:

I've played piano/keyboards for a while and am pretty familiar with them, but it's hard to recommend one without knowing your budget.

So how much are you looking to spend?

I wouldn't worry about changing octaves at this point. If you're good enough to change octaves on the fly, then you're good enough to invest in a better keyboard with a better range.  :smirk:

If you want to talk about different options, you can PM me your AIM name (if you have one... any IM program is fine).

I've been thinking the exact same thing for a while now, I'm looking at taking lessons myself.  Good luck with it if you do try.

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.
