I know next-to-nothing about MIDI and I'm looking to increase the sound capabilities of my synthesizer... It's an old Kawai and I can't find any sound cards or anything. Can't I just get a program on my computer that contains more sounds, and use my synth to control them??

yes
I don't know much about that, but I definitely know it's possible. Fruity Loops can use a midi controller. if you have a midi keyboard, anything can be used as a midi-voicer for it-hardware, software...

Yeah you want to look into VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins most of which are compatible with Cubase, and some other programs. be prepared to have to spend a long time learning how to use them effectively though. do a search for the word VST on kazaa or whatever you use. Or simply buy them.
