now i'm not a very big tool fan, but i can certainly find appreciation in their music. but if those 2 clips in this thread are melted banana, then i dont know what to say, it was just hurting my ears.

however this is the most pointless argument in the world. it's individual taste. and if you're taste lies with melted banana, then so be it, just don't play it around me or else my head will explode.  :microwave:

That band drove me crazy and I saw them two nights in a row! Imagine that one.
Headache from hell. Good thing Tool was there to mend my broken ears.

Though Tool, along with Fields of the Nephilim, are my favorite band, I am being completely unbiased when I state that I have no clue how Tool can be considered a watered down version of anyone. Thats like saying that Beksinski's paintings are watered down versions of Dali's! Shoot, even Opiate is a very original album. There may be some influences from led Zep, King Crimson, or even Rage, but the resulting music produced does not even remotely resemble the output from those bands(except maybe No Quarter, obviously).
Anyway, I've seen Isis and Big Buisness open for Tool this tour. Both would obviously be much better suited to a smaller venue, though the talent showed through. The Big Buisness drummer in particular stood out. Melt Banana? I've heard their only lyric is "corn chip".

Ok, i was the tampa show for tool/melt.

1. TOOL is a great band with top notch musicians and lyrical greatness.(some ppl dont 'get' maynard's lyrics, they need ot do their research.)

1a. Danny Carrey is known as one of the best drummers ever. he has been a professional drummer his whole life, at one point playing for 3 bands.

1b. Adam Jones' guitar work is the root of the progressive metal today, combining different genres into one rockin' sound.

1c. Justin chancellor is a good bassist, hes not the greatest musician in the band, but has picked up where Paul Da'amoto (or whatever) left off.

1d. Maynard thinks his shit dont stink, he may be right, but bottomline, he is one of the best front man around, he doesnt over power the music and as perfect timing and melody with the music made.

And for someone to say TOOL hasnt done anything for rock, just look at any progressive band today's influences, and TOOL is listed.

2. Melt Banana is a very eccentric band, with unbelievable sounds, they ae true pioneers of the 'grindcore' genre. The guitar player has so many effects he uses, its hard to keep track. and its hard enough playing guitar super fast AND having to worry about which pedal to adjust.

2a. While at the concert(frontrow floor) i heard ppl boo and make racist comments toward Melt Banana which made me wonder why murder is illegal.

3. TOOL always likes to have openers that will make the crowd think "wtf are they doing opening for tool" this tour alone they had Isis, Melt Banana, Big Business, all three are very different sounding bands, but all are good at what they do.

you might not like TOOL, but to deny the musicianship shows that you have no idea what it takes to make good music.

Ignorance is not an excuse for not liking something.

with all that being said, the concert was kinda gay, 75% of the fans their obviously dont listen to the lyrics of TOOL other wise they would have respected the band more. To throw things on stage, to scream and shout so you cant even hear the band playing shows that you arent at the concert to see TOOL, you are there to tell ppl you saw tool.

TOOL is a better band than any of you will ever be able to create, so dont hate.

As for 1c, I do'nt think you are giving Justin enough credit. I feel he is just as competent on bass as Danny is on drums if I can make a apples to poi comparison. I definitely agree that most of the people that attend Tool concerts are not in harmony with what the band represents. The crowd has an absolutely massive impact on the energy and overall performance of a show. Musical perfection combined with a disconnected audience makes for a merely good show. Robert Fripp has a lot of very insightful things to say about the music/musician/audient/audience relationship if anyone is interested.

bottom line: Tool are artists before they are musicians.

Adam Jones is the driving force behind that methinks.

great post falkor

i say that about justin because i dont know much of his work with peach, all i know of is his TOOL work, which is fabulous, the rhythm section of tool is the whole band, so Justin's Bass lines often are subtle.

well...

i guess it depends on the song tho i guess, like 'Schism', the intro is ALL bass guitar, very powerful sounding...

but on the intro to 'Eulogy' the bass line i very subtle and at a low octave..

overall, the whole band is great, i just see justin as the less great, idk if that makes sense :P

(apples to poi??? like fire poi?? idk get that; apples = fruit, poi = a dance form involving fire dance.

Yes, eulogy's bass part was actually written by Paul. Poi is a sticky food paste common in Hawaii. Very bitter, which is why I contrasted with the apple.

"Eulogy" (Keenan/Jones/Carey/D'Amour) – 8:25

yeah, your right, i get the songs justin did on Aenima confused.

regardless they are all great musicians.

and danny carey has been quoted saying they are a very selfish band, they dont make music for thier fans, they make it for themselves.
so they honestly could care less what ppl think... thats one reason why they have bands open for them that are completely out of their style.
