I have not, shamefully...I'm gonna need to wrie some of thsi shit down..

Also, want to say that I just recently read some Hemingway, namely I have read The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms. I really really loved Sun Also Rises, and was not too impressed with the latter, but it did definitely have its moments...I like the idea of people becoming Christlike in defeat even though it really didn't turn out that way, even in the book now that I think about it

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a good'un, Hemingway-wise. As is The Old Man and the Sea.

As far as Tom Robbins goes, I'd recommend starting off with either Still Life with Woodpecker or Jitterbug Perfume.

I'm in the middle of two books; one is Happy Endings by Jim Norton, which is a great laugh all the way through. The other is Tales from the Dark Millennium which is a book set in the Warhammer 40k universe.

They make you read The Old Man and the Sea in school and it doesn't mean much at the time.

I found going back and reading it with some years under my belt helped me get so much out of it. I really learned to appreciate the way his writing shifts between his narrative voice and the broken english stream of consciousness of the fisherman.

Nevertheless, I'm staying away for now...I'm going to check out some Irving, Robbins, and Dostoevsky

SD...I hated a Farewell To Arms...it seems to me that gay Mr. Hemingway enjoyed knocking off the main female character.

Personally, I enjoy romantic comedy/adventure like Around the World in 80 Days.

I read all of the LOTR trilogy, which was originally meant to be one loooong book but the publishes divided it up into 3.

Herman Hesse is a thought provoking author. Sidartha for ex.

You can go to the library and tell the desk clerk what you've read that you enjoyed and they will guide you to similar writings.

There is a series I'm reading now that's meant for young readers that I find engaging and clever...Artimus Fowl....you might want to check it out.

You might want to look at cook books from the library as well...get some good potato recipes!

Friday fast approaches! Good vibes com'in your way...

Had nothing to do with being "gay" - I'm surprised you take that route in critiquing him...

Hemingway was a macho man obsessed with the idea of a man alone...it was more misogyny than any sort of homosexuality that wrote that ending..

That could be but neither of us can prove our conjecture either way as we never met him and never will.

I know full well that some gay men not only are not women haters but admire women/female characteristics. It just seemed to make sense at the time when I read it in H.S..

There was an interesting thread recently that asked "How gay are you?"
in which some important, imo, points were raised that brought the wide range of "gayness" to light.

Misoginy, a wide spread thing yes..mmh

Narcissus and Goldmund (Herman Hesse) was very impressive to me. My favorit Flemish writer, Peter Verhelst, has actually one book translated in English 'Tonguecat'. If you like poetic use of words and don't mind not understand the plot from the beginning, read it and enjoy the waves of beautiful words. I wonder how they translated it.

Misogyny against who? Women? You think?

I mean now that I look back at what I have read of Hemingway, he does not seem to be all that fond of the fairer sex. The female characters are all one-dimensional and kind of crazy...the best example being Bret from The Sun Also Rises, though I love that character...she is not all that deep, we never understand why she is the way she is (alcoholic passive-aggressive manipulative little twat) background on the character is all irrelevant, yet she is the most important character...its simply not her story, though I'm sure hers would be far more interesting...how did she really feel about the main character, I wonder, I mean you get the impression that she is an extremely complicated chick but the dynamic that is focused on is how she is effecting the main, MALE, character.

The female lead in Farewell to Arms is far less interesting in her single dimension. She is the same throughout and is written very similarly to the way he writes his first wife in A Movable Feast...

So at the very most based on what I have read, I would not say that he hates women, but that he doesn't consider them as valid human beings. He is just disinterested in the women themselves and much more interested in their effects on men or on the male view of love.

It is love, not women that I would say he has a misogynistic view, as in what I have read of his, love is either unable to be truly reached as in The Sun Also Rises or punished in a karmic sense as in A Farewell to Arms.

Have you read both versions, or just the original untranslated?

Interesting take.

But in The Sun Also Rises it's the main character's physical disability (read: lack of a functional penis) that precludes him from loving women, not the women themselves.

i just finished "the plague" by albert camus, which was really good. it takes place in french algeria in the 30's and it's pretty much about what it sounds like. bubonic plague breaks out and it's basically about how the city reacts to it and deals with it once they've all been quarantined within the city. i think albert camus won a nobel prize for this one.

or "the road" by cormac mcarthy is a really good book too. it's about a man and his young son traveling to the warmer coastal regions in a world that's been trying to survive after about 6-7 years of nuclear winter, or some other huge disaster that created a blanket of ash over the world. it's just about them trying to survive and keep going in a world that is barren and dead. it's really well written too, imo. he writes in a really cool simplistic steinbeck sort of style, but with a much more poetic sense about it. it's one of my favorite books i've read in awhile.

Well, you are right...about the main character, but what about all of the other characters in the book who are in love with Bret?

The suggestions here and those who post them are very interesting!

I only saw the movie A Clockwork Orange..is it true to the book? I know...read it and find out. Just want a quick review.

I know Margaret Atwood is considered one of Cananda's great novelists but I find her work disturbing. That may be the point of course.

The book is much better, althought the film is excellent since Kubrick did it. But yeah, there are a bunch of differences in the novel from the film that some may not even notice. Also the book has the 21st chapter that Anthony Burgess had originally left out of the american printing of the book, therefore that wasn't in the movie.
