activity in the blueing mycenas is suspect [i also am just gaining interest in them and trying to expand my knowledge]; though certainly not established. there are toxic mycenas [containing muscarine i believe] and the toxicity of these species is also unknown. they should not be considered safe for experimentation.

remember that when it comes to experimentation with unknown actives, there is always the possibiity that one discovered will be both psychoactive and seriously toxic.

Regarding P. weilii, Georgia. I see no references to North Carolina in any of my files

mj

Again, all of this info has been published over and over in books and guides and is already posted here at the Shroomery

Thopse pages above have numerous followup pages with more listings for books on shrooms of the east, south and southeast USA.

Also Libraries have hundreds of shroom journals which would give you all the info you need, but then again, it is already published here at the shroomery.

Regarding Mycena's with bluing in them. Inocybes with psilocine/psilocybine have no muscarine in them but the more than two hundred other species do.

There are lists of the actives complete at this site and even their look-a-likes.

The Shroomry's Ultimate Guide tells how to differentiate Psilocybe and Panaeolus from all other non-active and ytozic species in simple english without confusing peopple by trying to compare them with other shrooms. They have distinct characteristics which differentiate them form other shrooms so there is no need to confuse everyone with your confusion.

Don't let Mjshroomer get you down. I am sure the vast majority would appreciate your efforts. There really aren't any comprehensive region specific guides. And the area you are covering is under represented as well. Keep at it.

Speaking of the area not being properly represented...I have been hunting for weeks (we finally started to get some rain and right conditions) and have come across nothing interesting in mississippi. If I do come across anything I will do my best to add to the regional knowledge, but will need your help...a lot of it, as I am new to this great community.

Bump

i hate living in north carolina i havent found a singel thing this year but my step brother says his feild behind his house is doing great he has found shrooms everyday for the past 2 weeks (duplin county area)

he isnt a experinced hunter but by what he said he has found on the net one of the kinds he has found is:
Panaeolus bispora
copelandia bispora

think they are both actives

Dont take my word on this though i havent seen them but i will be trying to head over to his house this week or next week and i will be trying to keep a list of finding for ya.

if anyone knows of these are they found in NC or might it just be his inexperince.

EDIT: I am trying to make a mushroom growing web site isnt gonna be publish this year but would LOVE to get a copy of this guide to add to my site. I plan on haveing tons of general knowledge kinda like this site. But i do know it will never be as good as this site.

Alan Rockerfeller,

I will avoid commenting on most of the gibberish here in these lists which really serve no purpose but to confuse people whoa re already confused. Many do not listen.

You Said:
Quote:
Psilocybe caerulescens

No, I really don't think this grows in north carolina, it is a Mexican species.

P. caerulescens, known in Oaxaca as the Derumbbe mushroom (Landslide mushroom, or sugar cane mushrooms), was originally discovered by Murrill in 1923 in Huntsville, Alabama, years before Wasson collected them in 1953-1955.

It was never found again in the USA until the 1990s when it was found in Louisiana and Mississippi. but in small groupings of five to ten mushrooms only at a time.

After ERoger Heim and both Singer and Smith Identified it as the mushroom Murill found In ALabama, it is strange. It is also close in physical appearance to P. weilii, but has many microscopic differences.

But again I am amazed that people go read really bad shrooom info and then post it here as if it were correct.

Also, Alan, Panaeolus papilionaceus is psychoactive and is not a synonym of P. campanulatus or P. sphinctrinus. Those latter species are not psychoactive.

Copelandia bispora is known from Hawaii, North Africa, Spain and Switzerland. It does not occur naturally in north america. The closest relative that he might have found is Copelandia cyanescens, which will be easy to ID by its blue bruising.

> Also, Alan, Panaeolus papilionaceus is psychoactive

It depends on who you ask. In the 1993 paper "Indole derivatives in certain Panaeolus species from East Europe and Siberia" by Luydmila S. Gurevich, a collection of Panaeolus papilionaceus was found to be free of psilocybin, baeocystin and serotonin, and contained traces of 5-HTP.

The same paper also found Panaeolus ater, Panaeolus rickenii, and Panaeolus sphinctrinus inactive.

a close friend of mine found some caerulescens here in georgia 2 years ago. they havent popped up in the same place since or anywhere else we have hunted. they were found by chance, stumbled upon in some undergrowth while looking for cubes in a local pasture. they grew just as said in mj's guide, rare but once found you will find several. he came out with something like 8-10. he initially thought they were weilii but it was proven otherwise.

i must also add....they were extremely potent....

The paper you are referring to is:

Gurevich, Luydmila S. 1993. Indole derivatives in certain Panaeolus species from East Europe and Siberia. Mycological Research vol. 97(2):251-254.
Five species of Panaeolus are analyzed for the presence of psilocybin and other tryptamine indoles (Panaeolus ater, P. rickii, P. papilionaceus, P. sprinctrinus, and P. subbalteatus). Psilocybin was only detected in P. subbalteatus.

There are two varieties of Panaeolus papilionaceus. One is the normal American-European collection of Panaeolus papilionaceus and the other is Panaeolus papilionaceus var. Parvisporus.

Now for some reason, Alan this is loated at the Mushroom observer as being named by Ewald Gerhaart who wrote his monograph in 1996 naming this variation of panaeolus papilioncaeus var parvisporus.

But the Mushroom observer, which also bears your name describes this species as identified form California in Feb of 2007 but there appear tobe no herbarium deposits or data pertaining to its correct identification as being the same mushroom named and identified by Gerhardt in 1996 or prior to that.

The mushroom observer, followed by your name gave this information:

Quote:
Panaeolus papilionaceus var. parvisporus Ew. Gerhardt
Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County, CA: Darvin DeShazer
Observation made: 2007-02-19.

and under that is the following.

Quote:
Name created: Tue Feb 20 17:57:44 -0800 2007
Last modified: Thu Apr 05 22:23:50 -0700 2007 by Alan Rockefeller (Alan Rockefeller)
Show Log.

Since Gerhardt created this name in the mid 1990s, what justifies that last paragraph which claims:
Quote:
Name created: Tue Feb 20 17:57:44 -0800 2007

That picture could be any species of Panaeolus int he P. sphinctrinus complex, although I do not see any veil rumnants on the image at the mushroom observer.

And with no herbarium deposits to determine what image that is, makes the post at that thread invalid as far as the academic and scientific community is concerned. I talked this over with my collegue Dr. Stivje and he agrees it does not really resemble the original line drawings form the 1800s of Panaeolus papilionaceus.

Both Emboden, Schultes, Hofmann, Ramsbottom and even Ott have found psilocine and psilocybine in this species.

I am also posting the original Gurevich Post which shows only her detection of Panaeolus subbalteatus as psilocine/psilocybine positive, with out any psilocine in her collections. And all other Panaeolus as void of any traces of psilocine/psilocybine/baeocystine.

And Gerhardt proposes P. papilionaceus var. papilionaceus as an epitype.

I am posting the original Gurevich article in a separate post here.

btw, some of her research in this English paper contradicts her research in one of 2 Russian Language papers by Becker, et al. which included Gurevich.

One last comment. The google.com goes to Wikipedia at this URL
http://images.google.com/images?q=Panaeolus%20papilionaceus%20var.%20parvisporus

Images are posted for both Panaeolus papilionaceus and for Panaeolus papilionaceus var parvisporus. Ande they both show the same fotograph so again there is a lot of misinformation at those two sites by people from internet sites adding their two cents including misinformation into the features posted on shrooms at Wikipedia and at google mushrom sites.

mj

See additional thread by Gurevich posted in the Psychedelic Experience threads. I won't be posting her papers written in Russian.

I really doubt that your friend found P. caerulescens in North Carolina. It is too far north for the growth of this landslide mushroom which is usually all associated with sugar cane fields and the landslides along the roads where sugar cane grows in Oaxaca. Mexico,. Your friend most like may have found some specimens of P. weilii which sometimes mimics P. caerulescens and could grow as far north as possibly from Georgia to North Carolina.

\Interestingly, no one in Florida has yet found P. weilii which so far is known only from Georgia. But P. caerulescens has since been found in Florida, as well as Mississippi and Louisiana, plus its originally discovery inthe early 1920s in Huntsville, Alabama by Murrill.

And again, if no one makes any herbarium deposits other than their stomachs, then no one in the field of academia would ever accept a word of mouth communication that they found a specific shroom in their state which does not grow their. And that would include many authors of shroom guides which cover the east coast, although, many still list P. coprophila and Panaeolina foenisecii as a psilocybian mushrooms because they took the data from badly written papers or from other books written by renown mycologists who also borrowed the species form their colleagues works.

^^it was georgia where he found the caerulescens*

he checked the spore samples under a scope and compared them with some weilii prints and said they didnt look identical. he didnt know what they were but had them sent off and was told many many months later that they were caerulescens (sent them to a biology professor at a college in south ga). caerulescens is something he didnt even think about- he thought they were some kind of new species he discovered.

on a side note mj, years back when i first got into hunting i recall an instance; it was my first trip to the field. i had printed off some pages from your guide and headed out, reading habitat desriptions and studying pictures while walking through the field haha. i found 1 rather large mushroom and 3 smaller ones but they didnt look like the one in the pic. i took them to a guy i knew that hunted and he confirmed that they were indeed cubensis. haha i was so excited. oh memories...
