Building Websites
    #7179475 -

Hey guys, after having gone through the process of building a website a couple of times, once by a hack and another by a professional team, I was wondering if there might be some good websites to go and read up on so I can get a better handle on this. I need two sites built and I'm not sure if it's because I live in a small boom town or what, but the prices quoted to me were INSANE!! The last site from 2 years ago was sweet and cost half as much as now by the same company. WTH?? Computers are not my strong point, but there have to be other options that 1K plus for a website. Thanks.

Given enough time and determination, almost anyone can create a decent website.

Prices are usually high because it takes a fair amount of time, and because the web professionals want to charge $50 or $100 an hour for their expertise, plus all their overhead. That 'simple' $1K website might take 10 to 20 hours or more.

Check out the NVU html editor for building basic sites - it is free and open source. (www.nvu.com). Special purpose sites might call for different software. I like drupal for content management.

Jakob Nielsen's site (www.useit.com) is not a how-to, but is excellent for principles of web design - how to keep it simple and functional.

HTML tags? I just go to a search engine and look for examples when I get stuck. CSS? Useful for concentrating the design into one file that controls the look of all pages.

Graphics editing? Lots of different utilities for cropping, resizing images for your site.

There are also webmaster forums where you can ask for a review of your site - they are usually pretty quick to tell what sucks, and how to fix it.

(One friend who is a computer consultant says he likes to double his prices every few years - he loses half his customers, but still makes the same amount of money, and has more time to either get new customers, or to ride his motorcycle.)
