cross-country motorcycle ride

so, I was talking to my best friend tonight. we've been on many, many roadtrips together - long treks straight across the US - east ,west, south, and one time all the way up to quebec city canada starting from colorado. we've probably have spent a few weeks together on the road.
anyways, we were talking about doing something else this summer or maybe next summer. I mentioned riding motorcylces instead. the idea clicked - we're both down.
anyone ever take a bike across the country? how is it?
we are thinking of just saving up for some used bikes and taking off either this [late] summer or early fall or next summer in june 2006 (plenty of time to save up and take time off - we both wont be able to take much time off work - we figured we'd need 2.5 weeks to be able to do it and be able to rest and party along the way). how much would a used but quality bike like this cost?
I guess I should start looking into learning how to fix shit.

Are you loooking for a harley type bike or a crotch rocket?
Crotch rockets are usually cheaper, but harleys are more comfortable and funner to ride (In my oppinion)

depends what kind of bikes you are looking for? don't get a Harley unless you really want to learn how to fix stuff. they are overpriced junk you are basically paying for the brand name. there are tons of bikes to choose from, but i really don't know much about bikes except for sport bike and i don't think you're back would appreciate that long of a trip in a sport bike. the only bike i would do this in is a Honda goldwing but i sit in a big couch all day so maybe you don't mind something less comfortable. also take a motorcycle safety course if you haven't already

Harleys type bike do usually have to have some maintinence on them. I would bring you bike to a bike repair shop and tell them to check it out and fix everything they can.

I'd rather be on a classic bike than some crotch rocket - I think my body would hurt after a few hours on one of those. I'll need something that I can ride in comfort for a few days. I dont care about brands - just whatever is comfortable and can take me 3000 miles with as little trouble as possible.
I'm gonna do more research.

Look into some of the mid age standerd bikes or non-Harl cruisers (more reliable, more comfortable, less annoying in my opinion...). Honda is known for their dependable bikes.

SV650s
I am looking forward to buying the Suzuki SV650s and riding it cross-country with a buddy of mine when he returns from his tour of duty in Iraq.
The sv650 is (I don't know about your riding experiences) supposedly a good beginner bike with extra kick to boot when you are more experienced.
For a mere (ha) 6 grand or so (with dealer talks) you could get a sv650s... a very nice piece of machinery. There is also a very large community SVRider.com with lots of good ideas and a large section of bike mods and how-tos. From what I have seen, these bikes support a moderate riding stance so you won't be riding with your back stretched.... Well not as much as you would on something like a gsxr or cbr...
Definitely something to at least read about.

That series ROCKED by the way - it was on Bravo and called "Long Way Round".....only way you can get it to watch is buy it through Amazon-UK, then you have to watch it on WIN-DVD (because of the difference in format between Europe/US dvd's).....BUT ITS SO WORTH IT!!

Personally, I like my sidecar rig Its not fast, but it looks like a classic and people who are not normally "motorcycle friendly" warm up to it...so I don't get hassled a lot

For such an adventure you will want comfort and reliability. There is only one answer...
Honda Goldwing
Trust me, when you are planning on spending hour after hour riding across the country you do not want a Harley or any type of sport bike. The only way you will get any enjoyment out of the experience is a good touring bike like the Goldwing. And they are built to travel so the reliability factor is there also.

Not sure what your budget is, but here are some nice bikes to take X-country. Do it with style/power/performance, and then some, if you can afford it.
Pinnacle of touring: BMW 1150rt

Excellent high speed tourer: Honda Blackbird

Another: Honda ST1300

Kawasaki Concours, budget tourer:

Do it right. You don't want to take a Harley/Chopper cross country; Easy Rider is a myth. Between poor suspension and lack of wind protection (fairing/windscreen) you probably won't make it one state over. It's extremely hard on your body to take a non-touring bike touring. Good luck whatever you decide, but I wouldn't recommend a Hardley Ableson (get it?) to anyone, touring or not. Those things are crap (literally). You're paying for the culture, a name, and a lot of maintenance visits. No offense Harley owners...
I took a Honda VFR X-country...best miles/memories of my life. Honda for life.

Diver has it right on the money. BMW is an excellent way to go. But if you cant afford the type of bike he showed you then there are def. good optoins for a lower price. I bought this for 2000 with the luggage racks and brand new tags and shit. Good condition too.
K1100 is a great choice.

Wow, awesome K bike. That's the kind of touring bike I'm talking about.. a BMW engine can take 300,000k+ miles of wear + tear, and then some. It's been documented. Nice one, that will go forever

That would be pretty heavy man. I'm not sure if I'd do that or not. I'd have to really think about it if it were me. Here's something to get you started, biO. Here's a couple audio Peter Fonda movie promos from the 60's.
"Easy Rider" promo 2.29 / 1:00
"Wild Angels" promo 995.1kb / :31
