Cool illusion

Maybe some people have seen this before, but I just came across it. I'm putting it in S&T since I think cognitive illusions are an interesting way to "reverse-engineer" your brain. It's basically the same thing as a Necker cube but I think the effect is much more compelling.



Which way is she turning? Are you sure??

I can't do it all, is there some kind of trick?

Her legs seem to indicate that she is rotating clockwise Just take a look at her foot.

I'm baffled on this :shrug:

A good way to help see is to look at her shadow. Maybe scroll down so you cant see her silhouette. There you can see here feet. Is the stationary one in front of, or behind the foot that sweeps? It could be either

Yeah I like this illusion because when you see her going a certain direction, it looks unambiguous and it's hard to imagine she could be going the other way. But that seems equally true for both directions. I had trouble getting it at first too, I thought it was a joke. Looking at the shadow does help, and don't focus too much on her bottom foot since that kind of breaks the illusion. Instead look at her leg out in front - or is it behind? After some practice I can make her switch every couple of rotations without shifting my focus, just by changing my perception. It really is a cool effect. If you still can't get it, try this one with my freaky hand-drawn face. But then you may not be able to get her going clockwise again. :wink:

Holy shit thats pretty fucked up. :lol: I had read this thread last night but thought it was bullshit. Then I took a look today and saw the little face you added on, it finally worked, and I can now make it change directions at will. Crazy. :thumbup:

Something cool to notice is that when she spins to the right, her right leg is up, but when she spins to the left, it's her left leg.

She switches legs really fast, eh? :wink:

try this everyone, to get it to switch back. stare at it for like 10 seconds, then rotate your head sideways so you are looking at it sideways, then rotate your head back, and see if it changed.

nice one, every now and again i come across some really interesting optical illusions on www.boingboing.net.... try searching the site for optical illusion or perceptual psychology or something of the like if you're interested.
