ok.

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

Cool.

I have long been interested in AI, programming my first Expert system, in BASIC no less, at 12. I started playing around with neural networks (namely SPOT) at 13, but the computing power available then made them all but pointless.

I'm curious as to what how they have progressed since then, as I quit following their progress long ago. Back then, I came to think that without some drastic rethinking of the concept, no matter what, there would never exist the mechanisms for spontaneous thought. While the technology had the ability (with enough power) to make semi-autonomous agents, they would never break out on their own.

I need to read up on the progress that has been made since then.

"One of IEI's main themes is that it is single-handedly building the required artificial intelligence technology to emulate and perhaps exceed the capabilities of the human brain. "

by now, any relatively well-informed person would move on to the next site

looks like a vaporware site to me.

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
