spoon out or shake out rye?
    #717428 - 07/02/02 06:51 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

I have colonized rye in jars. i shook one up and spread it on jiffy mix, but it dosn't seem to be recovering. How long should this take? I havn't put the top casing layer on yet. I have heard of spooning it out, but wouldn't that break the kernals? I don't wan't to brake the jars, cause they arn't even full.

If I fruit from cased grain, I spoon it out.
If I want to spawn bulk substrates, I shake it.

Shaking it up is a bit pain in the ass job, especially if the grain is a bit over incubated.
If you shake it up, then you get many kernels - many inoculation points - good for spawning.

If you want to case it directly, than you can save you the job of shaking it - spoon it out.

shaking it causes the mycelium to flatten, and not be so poofy. as long as it recovers before it contaminates, it's all good.

seems to be recovering, but slowly. i've figured out ir's best to shake them just enough to get the rye out, then flatten the clumps.
