Hi Chuckle head I got a quick question for ya which way do you prefer to pasturize pillow in a pot on the sink, or in ovenbags or how do you prep yours for spawning? TIA

Let me say a couple things before I begin. First I'm not that experienced of a grower. You'll see in my grow logs that I'm still getting a feel for my favorites. Second this is a little off topic and should probably be posted in the cultivation area. However since we're still talking poo here and it's a good bump for http://www.mycosupply.com I'll post it anyhow. Third I tend to be wordy because I believe that if I give you the why behind the answer you'll be able to adjust my advice to your needs.

I've never actually pasteurized poo myself before. I've always bought it pre done. However I have pasteurized a number of different casing materials (MGMC being my favorite at the moment).

I like pasteurizing using MonsterMich's method for pasteurizing bulk substrates and casings. Blutjager pointed me that direction and I'm sure glad he did. Here is the link.

As per Blutjager's advice I go a little on the dry side of field capacity since you can mist up to the desired moisture levels with casings. However with bulk substrate I'll be shooting for right at field capacity when I am ready to use this poo.

I really hate using the pillow case method. I tried it with straw a couple times and I didn't like it at all.

Also I'm not overly fond of spawn bags. I think they are a pain in the tail and I don't like the colonization speed I've had with them. That's based on my very limited experience with them. From what I can tell there just isn't enough air in the bag to get the hpoo to colonize properly without somehow re-inflating it. I have had much better results from opening the bag of pre-pasteurized poo and putting it in a 12 Quart Sweater tub. This has some advantages that I can see. First and best is you can layer your poo and spawn grain. That is a major plus. Second the poo is automatically in the shape of the container in which you are going to fruit. Third is you get much better air exchange by simply putting a foil lid on the tub and poking holes in the lid with a mechanical pencil. Then covering the holes with gentle paper tape. 4 inches of hpoo in a 12 quart sweater tub colonized fully in 7 days off of 2 quarts of spawn grain. I just thought of another advantage. I use a glove box instead of a flow hood. I find that trying to spawn grain to a bag of poo in a glove box is difficult. I'm sure my method is probably a great many times more likely to contaminate but it hasn't been a problem for me yet.

Take that for what it's worth based on my limited experience.
