ID (my guess is death cap)

Found this growing in pasture land, not from shit though.

I'm saying death cap not because I know what I'm talking about, cause the only shroom I can properly ID is a cube, but from the comparison of photo's they look similair.

I didnt pick the specimen, but it seems to have prolly a white spore distribution on the gills.













I have a few other ID's to post in a little while, cam batteries need to recharge.

Ok, if it is infact a death cap, would the amatoxins be deadly to a goat? We have a few goats in this pasture, and last week one of them became deathly sick, constant runny shit, until it died 4 days after symptoms. Another goat came down with the same symptoms and had to be relieved from grass cutting duties.

Would they kill a goat?

Its highly likely
being that it could take anywhere from 5-7 days to kill a human
I would say yes it could kill jus about anything that has a liver

..Thats why the bugs can eat toxic mushrooms like its candy..

Indeed death caps are toxic to a goats. but...
Given that you live in Louisiana, those symptoms you described in your goats is more likely due to the parasite Haemonchus contortus.

Yes, a mixture of oak, pine and some others I couldnt identify. Mainly pine though.

Thats goes for the same as me and my two fields are full of oak and pine and I find death caps during the cube season
But I never find them growing out of grass always either on the wood line or in the woods

I was considering that also.. due to his pics are not that great at showing good details of A. phalloides.
I have looked at about 30 or so pictures of death caps and they all seem slightly different then J's


We would need better info for a correct ID ...

I sporeprinted the cap on dark paper, it seems that it is mostly white, with maybe a hint of yellowish in it.

All the pics of phalliodes that I've seen show a veil, and this shroom dont have a veil, or leftover remnants of a veil. That might not be an important factor, but I figured I'd mention it.

Anything else needed for a positive ID? I have kids, so I didnt keep the specimen around for long, after the sporeprint, I destroyed it simply because of the chance it may be a death cap.

I was thinking it didn't resemble amanita, but I don't see anything else it fits.

How do you like A. silvicola or A. calyptrata for those? Is that any closer?

The specimen showed no signs of a veil. The latter choice says it has a fragile veil attachment, and beings this shroom was quite mature, it may have blown off the stem from wind.

So I would go with the A. calyptrata out of those two choices.

It's definitely an Amanita, but that cap surface doesn't really look like one of the Death Cap species to me. The fact that there was no evidence for a ring may be because there actually wasn't a ring.

If you still had the specimen in hand there is a fairly simple chemical test to see if there are amatoxins. But you need a fresh specimen. Try looking up the Meixner test.
