Conifer mushroom id help?
    #1668830 - 06/28/03 07:47 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

This large mushroom (15 cm x 10 cm cap ) comes up under my Conifer headge every year, in a very dry acidic place.

Smells very damp/musky mushroomy.

Seems to have a volva and clear large stem ring with a browny purple tint on
the top side of the ring veil.

Cap texture is scaly, dry , brown to white in colour.

Bruises pink when cut.

Cap rim inturned around the margin.

Gill complete from stem to rim.

Stem, large swollen watery with a semi hollownes and pink bruising.

I always asumed this was a death cap before i started in this hoddie.
So interessted in anyone thoughts on what it could be.
Am i correct to asume its an Amanita?
But not a death cap?

:print: Print is being taken now, and i'll add it one shortly.

Any other questions of things i should look closer at can be done, as there are always others popping up once they start to show ( this is the first this year and i had to put a butcket over it as its growing in the chicken pen :-) )

Anythoughts?

I was really hoping for Agaricus of some sort :-) as the chickens seem to eat them with no real side affects :-) spore print could well turn out brown, looking at the gill colour.
Any idear what Agaricus it maybe?

The bruising and the size narrows it down a bit, but still it could be any of around 10 that are left...
Let?s wait for ToxicMan, if anyone knows, he will.

No, it's definitely not an Amanita.

It's an Agaricus, and fairly close to Agaricus bisporus. Unfortunately, Agaricus are tough to identify to species.

Happy mushrooming!

If it smells and tastes like the supermarket A. bisporus, and we are sure it?s an agaricus, then it?s edible, right?

Id assume it would be ok if not yellow staining is evident and their is no chemical smells or tastes upon cooking - but to say my knowledge of agaricus is lacking would be an understatement.

The big things to watch for are yellow staining and a phenolic (or metallic or inklike or library paste like) odor. The odor is often strongest at the base of the stem. You can also cometimes enhance the odor by slightly crushing the base of the stem with your fingers.

You should also pay attention to the odor as it cooks. Sometimes you can miss the odor when it's fresh, but it comes out as it's cooking.

If it doesn't bruise yellow and it doesn't have the phenolic odor then it's edible, although there is some variability among the species as to how good they are to eat.

As with any new wild mushroom, when you try it for the first time you should eat a limited amount (less than 1 teaspoon), to minimize any bad reaction you mightr have to it. If you don't have a reaction overnight then you can enjoy yourself.

Happy mushrooming!
