Philosophy and depression
    #7080068 -

I don't know too many people that lead happy lives and read philosophy. I'm not exactly sure why, but it seems like they over analyze everything, including themselves.

Have any of you noticed that philosophy leads some to depression? Why do you think that is?

It's a very thin line. I've read the basics (Tolstoy, etc.) and manage to live a very fulfilling life. The fact does, however, remain. Philosophy is in and of itself, a depressing field. I find it very easy to, as you put it, overanalyze, but it doesnt depress me. Rather, I believe that my readings and understanding have lead to a level of cognition that is ever fulfilling to me, adding both depth and intrigue to mundayne, every day interaction and functioning.

I've read alot about it in the past, but I finaly figured out that it didn't have too much bearing on my life. I just try and keep a don't give a shit attitude toward the things I can't change and go after the things I can. It's more conversation piece than anything. People like to know and relate with someone who knows what they're talking about.

Does philosophy really add to your life besides adding deepness to your character?

In a way, yes. But perhaps I didn't make myself clear. It's not the knowledge itself that adds depth, it's the interpretation.

Are people depressed because they read philosophy or do depressed people gravitate to philosophy?

In my experience, I'd have to go with the latter. Depression brings with it a thirst for an alternative view, some knowledge that will contrast with the hell you are in.

... or maybe that was just me:grin:

Hmm. People look for meaning. People always seem to ask me whats up.. I'm not actually depressed.. I enjoy my life.

The thing is when I sit and think about the world, from the significance of the smallest particle, to the infinite unity that is the universe I can't help but have a blank sad looking expression on my face. I think this is because my thoughts tend to deviate from my physical being.. "living in the clouds" is the expression I believe.

Now I over analyze every single detail about everything... there are definitely links between everything; and interpreting this data is the key to understanding it. Not so much a 'why' .. but 'how'.

I find this allows me to make myself a better person; I can justify my actions on a deeper level.. allowing me to feel harmonious with my environment... It also satisfies my thirst for knowledge; knowing (or discovering?) there is a pattern behind everything.

Have you ever seen that movie 'Pi' ?

I've seen pi.  It was pretty interesting.  I went through a period where I was constantly placing a huge significance on sacred geometry and fealt as if there were an underlying code to everything.  It was interesting, but I tend to stray away from it all now.  Taking things at face value is much easier and keeps me from being locked in mental loops.

My quality of life is at an all time high right now.  I don't read philosophy now.

The reason I asked this question to begin with was because I've kind of gotten the reputation of being philosophical, among my friends.  My best friend seemed really down and started in on some philosophy he's been reading up on.  I basicly told him to take the stuff with a grain of salt and to be careful not to over analyze everything.

Maybe it's because people look into philosophy for answers, but all they find is questions.

Well my social life is in decline (well not so much decline; I'm meeting a lot of new people, but I'm being more selective about who I call my friend) .. I'm finding myself more reclusive (but definitely not introverted); because I enjoy chilling on my own.. Although the people I have chosen to surround myself with, I've found that I'm connecting with them on a higher level (Particularly my girlfriend; we're getting on much better lately).

I'm much more focused on my education. I've realised that my strive in life is towards understanding; and the best way to do that is to pursue education to the highest level. I've started studying outside of classes (something I never used to do) and I'm finding myself genuinely interested in what I'm doing.

The one thing is; at times my mind feels cluttered. I have to sit down and organise my thoughts. Whether this be through meditation, or expressing my understanding of the world to a friend, or simply having a smoke and playing some music.. It makes me feel very refreshed and gives me the motivation to understand further.

As far as I can see philosophising is augmenting my life. At some point I would like to write a short book/ essay/ memoir on my understanding on the universe.

People with personality types who are more likely to be depressed are more likely to have the awareness and intuitiveness to get interested in philosophy. It takes a certain sort of mind to be depressed, and a certain sort of mind to philosophise. Often the two overlap IMO

Ok so I didn't read any of the thread except the first post.

I just want to say that I'm not much of a philosipher I'm just starting to listen to philosiphers and what they have to say. Right now isn't the happiest time in my life so I guess u could say I'm a little depressed but when I listen to philosophy it makes me feel better makes me feel like my way of thinking isn't strange or abnormal. I consantly think and theorlize about alot of things. Sometimes I think I think to much and over analyze things. But I dont know, Philosophy does alot for me and it's good that it does IMO

I've noticed that too. Maybe people are looking for answers; to make sense of the unfairness and mercilessness of life. I find most discussions about philosophy to be just mental masturbation. Analysis is a product of dissatisfaction, methinks... All I know is that the happier I am, the less I think and the less I analyze, and vice versa.

Same with psychology. People I've met who are into psychology are usually neurotic and unhappy.

I just came in here to say -

Iiiiiiiiiiiiii-manuel Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table
David Hume could out-consume
Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
And Wittgenstein was a beery schwine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel

There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist
Socrates himself was permanently pissed

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will
After half a pint of shandy was particularly ill
Plato, they say, could stick it away
Half a crate of whiskey every day
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle
Hobbes was fond of his dram
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart
"I drink therefore I am"

Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed
A lovely little thinker but a bugger when he's pissed

I agree. When I'm depressed I think way more than I do when I'm happy. I mean I always think constantly. Even when I'm happy I think all the time I just think more about the situation I'm in at that moment and how happy I am in it. When I'm depressed I think more about life and the meaning and what its all about and why we have money and all the rules and bullshit that make life unbearable I mean we were given life to live but the world makes that impossible and the govt and money. We were meant to just live freely and the way we want to and do what we want to do. I mean killing and all that is wrong but stress is one of the main reasons for killing along with jealousy envy desperation...all these things are main reasons for murder and they are all stemmed from money and the way this world has been ruled and organized and lawed do u get the point I'm tryin to get at.

I'm trying to say all this and watch CSI at the same time so forgive mean if it is jumped around a bit. I'm goin to do spell check though lol

well you have to recognize the bad then realize that you think it's bad and then realize there is not bad and that everything is so.

good and evil... this and that... yin and yang.... you need one to have the other. It's all normal and putting more value upon one and creating imbalance will drive one mad...

I don't know, BUT... I THINK.

This is a familiar thought pattern

One thats got me at the moment is 'cause and effect'.

Wow, this thread is so right on. I'm getting my phd in philosophy and I absolutely hate most people in my program because they are so utterly joyless and depressing. Very few of them have girlfriends and they seem to be always worrying about everything. We mostly have to write 20 page papers and they all take extensions because they are producing these 100 page tomes of "wisdom" and I don't understand why they think any professor wants to read 100 pages of their bullshit.

I am not like this at all so it's really hard for me to be around these people and act like myself because I always feel like I'm too happy or not serious enough for them. At this point, I pity them mostly.

There's a lot of philosophy that is about freeing your mind, embracing love and living a joyful life but this strain of the discipline is like the counter-history of philosophy and I mostly work on resuscitating the joyous impulses of philosophical thought--which I believe can be found in the work of most philosophers.
