They probably just see us as another type of animal that spends all day adding to and adjusting its nest, making annoying noises and grooming itself.

Well, define your definition of think.  Have you ever asked an animal and had him tell you logically how his mind works.  Of course not, because they cannot talk, some can mimic, but non can talk.  Therefore, they may think but it's not the kind of "thinking" that we have come to know and understand about human thought.  It's a completely different way thtat only they know, and their brains are not large enough to understand themselves.  Most animals just live purely out of survival, like us in a way, but we have a more advanced system of existence because of that thing that we only use a small portion of:  our brain.
