In order to fix the problem, you first have to find where the problem is. Rather than shoot in the dark hoping to solve the problem, lets try to logically isolate the location of the problem so that we know what to fix.

Step 1, ensure that your computer is talking to the router through the wireless connection. To do this, click "Start", then "Run" and type in "cmd", click "ok". A black window should appear. At the prompt in the window, type "ipconfig". It will spit back some info... Look for info below the line that reads something like "Ethernet Adapter Wireless Connection 1" (NOT ethernet adapter local area connection). It should list the following lines:

IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Subnet Mask: yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
Default Gateway: zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz

If you get a "Media disconnected" instead, then your computer is not talking to the wireless router. Assuming you got numbers in place of xxx, yyy, and zzz, then we need to verify that your computer can talk to the router and the router to the computer. In the black window at the prompt, type "ping zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz" where the Z's are the numbers from the default gateway. You should get four good replies: "Packets: Sent=4, Received=4, Lost=0". If you get timeout's instead, let us know.

Assuming you got four good pings, then the computer and router are talking with one another and it is not a "wiring" issue between the computer and the router.

Step 2, see if your router is routing. In the black window, type "tracert -d 69.28.174.162" and see what it returns. If you get a lot of "* * *" lines, then there is probably a problem with the router talking to your ISP. If you see lots of numbers, and very few *'s, then your router is routing traffic and we move on.

Step 3, see if you can resolve a name. In the black window, type "nslookup www.shroomery.org" and hit enter. You should get back a few lines, the last two which read:

Name: www.shroomery.org
Address: 69.28.174.162

If you don't get an address, then there is a problem with the DNS settings on the rotuer.

Finally, step 4, if all the above work, but you still can't browse, then test to see if you can talk to a well known service. In the black window type "telnet www.shroomery.org 80" and hit enter. You will get a black screen. Type "GET" and hit enter twice (you won't see the text you type). It should scroll a bunch of text (two or three pages), followed by a "connection closed" message. If this is not what you get, let us know.

At this point, if all of the above worked, and you still cannot browse, then you have a spyware/malware/windows-sucks issue, most likely.

ok, i reset the router.. and now im not even connecting it netgear.

im going to try and configure the router again.. i only have 1 ethernet cable as well.. so i cant have my computer connected to the internet and be running through my router at the same time, which is making things a little more complicated.

if you are able to reach the public network (internet) while connected through ethernet and NOT through wireless, then consider the following.

If you are connecting wireless by supplying a WEP encryption key and this key is already stored in the windows Wireless Zero Config (ie: you don't have to type it when you try to connect) than chances are this key has become corrupt somehow, and while it allows you to 'connect' to the wireless router, the router will not treat you as an authorized user and restrict you to the local network only. Try disabling encryption and connecting, or finding your connection and re-entering the WEP key.

Just a guess from prior experience with NETGEAR equipment.

1. Connect to the wireless connection

2. Start>Run type CMD then type ipconfig /all

3. Then tell us what it says.
