Enter the Terabyte Age!
    #7042767 -

This is it guys, a 1 Terabyte hard drive.

Quote:
Hitachi is planning to release a one-terabyte hard drive by the end of the year. The hard drives will be of the standard 3.5-inch size and will make their way into PCs and home servers. One terabyte of storage is plenty, methinks, but since high definition video takes up an awful lot of space, having a terabyte (or two) of space available will become more and more necessary.
.
Company reps haven't even so much as hazarded a guess as to how much this sepulcher will cost. – Nicholas Deleon, 8-15-2006

1 Terabyte = 1.000 Gigabytes.

It can store 400 million pages of .txt, 16.000 hours of mp3 (supply you with 16 hours of fresh music a day for 1.000 days), 2.000 hours of .avi movie and more such goodness.

Currently they're out at $399 a pop.

Unbelievable how technology advances!

.
How much hard drive capacity has your own private computer?
You may choose only one

I have two 160 GB drives which now are in a RAID configuration (one disk is a realtime backup of the other - no more dataloss ever) but I could turn RAID off and it'd be 320 GB, so <500 GB here too

I bet we're only about a decade away from being able to fit every piece of information ever created onto one hard drive the size of a penny.

I think if we eat our vitamins data storage capacity might become so vast that they come with a partition of pre-installed data, for instance containing the entire Library of Congress, and a bit later on we all might have an offline copy of the Internet, and data traffic being just updates and communication

Hey, they're the first to enter a new playfield. Once a bunch of other tech companies have Terabyte drives of their own, the price race starts.

Still, it's already at $0.40 a GB, not bad for a new thing thats been out for a mere 6 months.

It wouldnt be 1,024 Gigabytes?

My harddrives in the main computer are labeled as 80Gb, 250GB, 320GB so <1TB for me

1.000 and a trifle, yes :smirk:

Somehow I expected you to have a big rig.
I'm not making a pun, I don't know why but I expected it.

This is probably a statement that'll take a mere decade to nullify, but at the moment I think that a 1 TB drive with a second one as a realtime backup would be all the drive space I'd ever need.
I mean, shit's big.

I remember when a gigabyte was a big deal. My first computer didn't even have a hard-drive. I'm getting old.
