Problems with my salvia plants
    #699556 - 06/25/02 02:18 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I bought a number of salvia plants from Richters.

On arrival, at least one was badly damaged (stem snapped in half), so I'm not expecting to save that one.

However, I'm having troubles with the rest. They're looking wilted and there are black areas of the leaves.

I thought originally they didn't like how dry it was in my place (40-50% RH), so I put them in a little terrarium with perlite and >90% humidity. It's generally about 80F in here during the day right now.

Any ideas or pointers? I'd hate to lose all these plants....it's a crying shame.

well dont toss out the broken one, just throw the tips of both pieces in some water and they will take root and you will have 2 plants rather than 1.....i know they like high humidity....to get specifics wair for the others to respond...

Gradual acclimatisation would be best in my opinion. Perhaps try a slightly lower humidity than 90 and reduce the temperature to 70 - 75. From my experience problems often occur because of sudden changes in their environment.

As for the one which is badly damaged: if there is any leafs below the snapped stem, then it should survive.Try putting the top broken section in water as it may root.

If the leafs have started to go black, it would be a good idea to cut away any black areas to stop any rot spreading. Have you got any pictures???

Regards

They don't look that bad, they should be fine once they have had time to recover.

CDN$10.00 (US$7.00) each plus shipping.

I've complained to the supplier about the one decapitated plant and the general condition of the plants. Maybe I was expecting too much...

Are the black areas shriveling from the outside of the leaf in? If the leaves can bend but are just a bit stiff it might be margin burn. You can buy Pro-tekt (supplimental silicon) from Basement Shaman for $10.

My salvias benefited greatly from it.

That's exactly what's happening.

The plants are now in a terrarium with high humidity. Several people have commented the shock of being moved might being doing Very Bad Things(tm).

I ordered some Pro-tekt from the manufacturer...but it's gonna take a while to ship here from the U.S. of A.

In the meantime, leaves continue to fall off my specimens. However, one of them does look like it might be producing some new leaves.

*fingers crossed*

My plants were dropping leaves too but for every one that dropped 3 sprouted. I wouldnt worry about them; if they have high humidity and the pro-tekt they'll grow nicely.

I know salvia likes shaded areas that are humid. By the way, could someone PM me with a good supplier of Salvia plants? I'd like to pick up a few myself.
Thanks.

All my plants died. Another vendor of salvia plants commented that the supposedly 'professional' nursery that supplied mine had potted cuttings way too early and the shock would not do them much good.

So, back to the drawing board...
