Jerry or Trey?
    #6991476 -

Who's the more skilled guitarist?

I have been a Deadhead for a while and am not familiar with much of Phish's music. My friend claims that Trey is a much better guitarist, although we are both bigger fans of Jerry. I don't know much about judging music technically, and I haven't heard a broad enough sampling of Phish to comment. What's your take, though?

Trey can play really fast, probably faster than Jerry, but in my opinion all that means is that he took a lot of time to train his fingers. Jerry played with more soul, more feeling, and, most importantly, more originality. Jerry inspired a generation of guitar players, you can't say the same for Trey at all. Jerry was a better musician, artist and performer.

Apples and oranges. I think it is the energy behind the notes, and the experience. They both are great in own ways, but Jerry will always be more famous than Trey.

What does STAL mean?

In retrospect, this thread was kind of meaningless.  That's the way it goes, sometimes.

Nah, they both have a role to play. We have been twice blessed. One for Jerry, he has his own icecream, so... twice for Jerry really. Also Trey has been a blessing. Thrice blessed I should say.

As for me though, I am inclined to favour Jerry much over Trey. Jerry plays with a certain passion and soul that ignites some slumbering joy way down in the center of my being. Also when he sings, it moves me.

Trey just makes my head feel good when he plays.

Also I believe stal means stall.

STAL is an option historically and traditionally added as an option to every Shroomery post. It was started by a user named Sir Tokes a Lot.

I think Trey is an amazing guitarist, but every song I've ever heard from Phish has made me want to puke. I especially can't stand when they play ambient music in the background and just start mumbling some stupid long story about nothing. so I prefer the Dead, personally ...

however, Trey has done really good solo stuff, and his work with Les Claypool in Oysterhead is just incredible.

I truly feel Jerry was the better guitarist, from what I've heard .. more flow in his style than I've almost ever heard, sans David Gilmour ...

Trey in his prime was way more skilled than Jerry ever was. Fact.

Then again Trey most likely couldn't play all the stuff Jerry could. Their styles were very different.

Also, Trey's transcedent moments of perfection-on-guitar were not exactly the norm.

Jerry probably knew more chords.

blahblahblah whatever I like Phish more overall, its trippier.

Listen to Mike's Song from the 1992 show at St. Mike's college. Perfection.

Jerry may have had the blues/country/folk "emotion" but Trey had the funk/trip/beauty "emotion".
