Inspirational Guitarists
    #19209481 - 11/30/13 06:01 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So I'm learning guitar and I'm looking for some bad ass guitarists to listen to so that I can learn a thing or two. here's the thing, I'm searching for some particular styles of guitarists. Multiple styles, not just one but three to six at the most...I don't want to get caught up listening to too many and let my playing suffer because its easy to become overwhelmed at this stage.

So for the first style I want a simple folk style acoustic guitarist, I'm thinking Bob Dylan for this style but I'd like to hear more suggestions, it'd also be a huge plus if said guitarist was a finger picker AND flat picker that did rhythm and melody. Perhaps a singer/songwriter though.

The second style I'm looking at is psychedelic rock and I'm thinking its obviously Jimi Hendrix but I want to hear more suggestions as well.

The third style is something strange, jam improvisation, I'm thinking its obviously Jerry Garcia for this one, I think this may be the most important on my list.

This is the tough one and its very specific, I'm looking for a FINGERSTYLE acoustic guitarist who plays in DADGAD, think Irish folk traditional and Celtic. This is gonna be the toughest to find, I believe since its not a typical genre and its not standard tuning. Singer/songwriter style or perhaps a band member with some distinctly shimmering chops would be nice!

Any recommendations would be helpful. If you have any then please leave their name and what style they fit just a number 1-4 will do. Thanks, guys.

Two acoustic guitarists who finger picked using alternate tunings that are both highly respected are Nick Drake and John Fahey.

I know exactly what you need. There is nothing to suggest that I woiuldn't know. I just came back from Berlin & we've all been talking about future lessons we can arrange for you. WE arranged for John Lennons 50 years ago. I'm going back to find you a guitar that suits you. We can see her before we go so you can show her your skills. We actually discussed how we can teach you some really tricky chords. It was a week ago at a tea party that my friend didn't attend & which they had substituted him for his former best friend who betrayed him last fall when he stabbed him in the back. I'm going to give ou a guitar that will work. I know people that also want me to give you this guitar so I CAN'T not give it to you. You WILL reach a point in your development where the guitar will do most of the playing FOR you. The guitar will begin to play music on its own accord without you touching it. The guitar will begin to play you instead of the opposite.

Well besides the usuals Elizabeth Cotten sprung to mind as a good picker she was usually playing standard besides the one song I know by her 'Spanish Flang Dang' which is in open G it's the first song on this video. Nice shots of the guitar and right hand position, you could probably figure it out. Notice her guitar is strung upside down because she got a right handed guitar as a kid and didn't give no fucks, just flipped it. This channel on youtube SeattleFolk has a shitload of great videos check them out. Lots of knowns, unknowns, all great.

Also shameless Django Reinhardt plug because he is amazing but when it comes to playing his tunes not so amazing as he is on another level. Not bad for a guy whose fretting hand was almost completely crippled by a fire :smilingpuppy:

It might be incoherent but the end is true for sure. There will be a point where you don't think about it while you play and when you put the instrument down you'll realize that it sounded great but you don't remember doing it... almost as if the instrument plays itself through you. It channels itself and its expression to your fingers, its pretty neat I like it a lot.

I skimmed your OP first time and didn't see this but, complete bullshit. Listen to everything, try to play everything, that's what you gotta do. I mean it just makes sense to hear and play as much as you can. Become overwhelmed. Don't focus too much on trying to become anything in particular, just keep playing and listening to what appeals to you.

You won't learn guitar from listening to it. Although the best guitarist to learn from is one you actually. But never mind that. Play guitar because it feeds your soul and see where it takes you.

Not what I heard. You gain a lot by analyzing your favorite. Yes, nothing is better than hands on practice but learning is visual as well. Where do you think "watch and learn" comes from? I think it's important to develop your own style by imitating the guys you look up to. How else would anyone learn but by looking up to their fathers or in this case...fathers of folk or rock.

Not trying to be an ass but I don't see why people insert opinion without answering my question. It gets annoying scrolling through shit like that. Lol.

I did answer your question. Someone you know. You're not gonna learn dexterity, the most important trait of a guitarist by listening to music. Everything else is trivial until you can play. Just saying, I've been playing for years.

I can tell.

And your post had a typo and I didn't understand it. Oh and I don't want to pick up on the styles around me, they're not to my liking with the exception of one but he's always playing another instrument whenever we get together cause they're are like eight other guitarists in our circle.
