It's official - Arod is a dirty, dirty player!
    #6990519 -

This just shouldn't be allowed :noway:

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/

Alex Rodriguez is in the news again today for his distractions both on the field and off of it.

In Toronto, Rodriguez helped the Yankees snap their five-game losing streak by disrupting Blue Jays third baseman Howie Clark on a key popup late in the game. A-Rod shouted while rounding third, causing Clark to back off at the last second and let the ball fall to the turf. The move (A-Rod claims he shouted “Hah,” while the Jays claim he yelled “Mine!”) touched off arguments all over the field last night (Toronto manager John Gibbons called it “bush league”) and on Internet message boards and radio airwaves this morning.

What exactly did he shout? If you're a lip reader you can try to figure it out for yourself by checking out this YouTube clip.
(Here is the link to that - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hYZA_s_E8M)
And Sox fans, does this incident remind you of a certain glove slap in the autumn of 2004?

When asked about A-Rod's callout on Boston sports radio station WEEI this morning, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein tiptoed around the issue, not specifically calling out A-Rod but saying that there are “certain things that you just don’t do to the opposition on the baseball field.”

Epstein was also vague about the ever-hazy unwritten rules of baseball, a topic that gets debated from time to time when incidents like this arise. So how does he define these “rules”?

“I’m not sure it’s easy to explain ... what’s acceptable and what’s not acceptable probably goes way back to the early 1900s,” Epstein said. “I guess you just want to be on the right side of that and not on the wrong side of that ... certain things certainly get the ire of the opposition.”

What do you think? Did A-Rod break one of baseball’s unwritten rules? Or do you see this in the same light as a player sliding hard into second base to break up a double play -- anything to help the team win? And would you see it differently if A-Rod were in a Red Sox uniform? Let us know your opinion here ...

Meanwhile, A-Rod was all over the New York tabloids for an entirely different reason. We won’t get into it in this forum, but if you’re interested in learning more about the Yankees third baseman’s adventures in adult entertainment, check out the New York Post and Daily News.

He clearly yells "MINE" in the youtube video.  Or, since I'm not a professional lip reader, I suppose I can't say that - but he definitely did not say "Hah".  That's shitty

The Yanks and Jays don't play again until July, I believe. I'd put money on A-Rod getting plunked in his first at-bat, unless it's a situation where that'd load the bases or something.

I really just can't believe he did that. That's so fucking dirty! I understand that desperate times calls for desperate measures, but really....saying MINE under a pop up? That's fucked up!

You'd think the Blue Jays would know each other's voices.

:tinfoil:

Looks more to me like the two Jays got confused (had a miscommunication amongst themselves) and then wanted to blame their fuck up on A-Rod. :smirk:

You get paid millions of dollars and one guy shouting at you makes you flub an entire play? Fuck that, you should be fired. Also, baseball sucks.

If someone yelled "MINE" next to my head when I was lining up to catch a ball, I'd move too.

I doubt they know each other's voices Robot...plus, in a split second thing like that, you think he's going to say "Wait, that doesn't sound like my short stop...maybe Arod is trying to FOOL me!!"  He just reacted.  Arod should have been called out automatically, per baseball's rules.

MLB Official Rules: 7.00 The Runner

Any runner is out when:
(b) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball; or hinders a fielder attempting to make a play on a batted ball

MLB Official Rules: 2.00 Definition of Terms

INTERFERENCE
(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter-runner, or a runner out for interference.

He attempted to confuse them - and should have been out.

Take it up with the umpire, not A-Rod. According to the rules you just cited, this is just about as viable as arguing a called 3rd strike.

How does that have anything to do with a batter arguing a 3rd strike? That isn't attempting to confuse someone in the middle of making a play at all. I don't care about the rules to be honest - even if that wasn't in the rules, which can be interpreted however the umps want, I think that's a dirty thing to do as a professional ball player.

You quoted MLB rules as a reason why A-Rod should have been called out. We aren't talking about right and wrong once you bring the rules into it. We're talking about the rules of the game.

The umpires judge the game according to the rules.

Therefore, your estimation as to why A-Rod should have been OUT is up to the judgment of the umpires. The umpires didn't call him out. Which means that the Jays' arguing with the umpires about what A-Rod did pretty much the same as arguing a called 3rd strike. The umpires made the call. The call stands.

Well that's another discussion. But you brought up the rules..I'm just trying to point out that it doesn't matter, since every rule is left to the discretion of the Umps.

Like I said though, if I'm A-Rod stepping up to the plate against a Blue Jays pitcher next time the two teams play, I'm very much ready to dive down to the ground and out of the way.

I know, right?

It's just weird that he's the highest paid player in the game, and makes such questionable decisions. First the thing with smacking the ball out of Arroyo's glove, now this shit? I guess whatever though - whenever you're that famous, everything you do is magnified 100x and that has to SUCK.

I still hate him though

He was probably in a real shitty mood that night between the pictures of him and the blonde chick and his wife moving out of his apt back in NYC.

I don't think she "moved out", but I would take an out of town vacation if I were her just to avoid the vultures. Then again, maybe they were already done. Who knows at this point. This is a bad precedent and a new level of athlete torture. And, not for nothing, though I would probably hit it if I were single I wouldn't cheat on anybody with that woman. She aint all that by a fair long shot.

Rodriguez didn't say "mine" he said something similar to "ha". I've seen it a dozen times now and it's pretty clear there is only one syllable and it doesn't start with an "mmm" sound. It's pretty clearly an unvoiced plosive. Tough shit for the morons. Confuse? Come on there Liz, your interpretation is rather ridiculous when applied to yelling. Now standing in front of him and waving your hands, maybe. I can't tell you how many times I have timed my path to the next base so as to come as close to the path of a ground ball as possible to fuck up the fielder. Designed to confuse. Feh, stupid tempest in a teacup by Arod haters and embarrassed Blue Jays.

As to the Arroyo thing it was just fine. Now that cunt Varitek starting a fight with a catcher's mask firmly in place, that right there isn't Bush league, it's Bitch league. But we've been through this already, haven't we.

For starters, "mine" is one syllable, so I don't know where you were going with that one.

Secondly, I don't care if he ran behind him and yelled "Cockadoodledoo" - he shouldn't have done it.  He shouldn't be doing cheap shit like that to try to fuck up a play.  I think it's unprofessional, and if Youkilis, or Varitek, or Manny had done it, I would be saying the same fucking thing, in all honesty.

I might hate Arod, but I have a ton of respect for how great he is at the game.  Regardless of what team you're on, you should conduct yourself with a level of maturity, and he sure as hell didn't.  EVen the announcer calling the game says in the video "He said mine", as he watched the replay.  That's what I saw, too
