somehow pkd makes the reader feel like they have a split personality while reading the book. you will start it, get lost and start it again, but when you get it... you really get it.

no other way to describe that book.

I wonder how he does that. :yesnod:

I have only ever dabbled in Dick.  VALIS is his most autobiographical work apparently.  Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is the one he is usually automatically associated with but I didn't find it particularly compelling.  I hear good things about his short stories.

And I would love to read A Scanner Darkly because that movie was awesome!

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Don't read VALIS first. VALIS is the deepest journey into his mind, his most honest volume. I think you would get more out of VALIS by exploring his themes and obsessions through his other books first.

I suggest:

Dr. Bloodmoney
Clans of the Alphane Moon
The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch
The Man Who Japed

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

LOL, OneMoreRobot, I am listening to "Down on the Corner" by CCR and your avatar was dancing along in such a perfect way. I'm laughing hysterically.

Hahaha, yeah I can't say I didn't consider that as I wrote.  Ultimately I thought the comic effect of the double entendre was totally worth it.

I liked the martian time slip, but honestly most of his books are pretty similar.
