Theoretically, I'm free to go to Hollywood and become a movie star. Doesn't mean it's a realistic choice.

That is just a ridiculous rebuttal.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

Dude...without these people toiling away my t-shirts would go from $10 to like $12. That is unthinkable.

theoreticly you can try to become a movie star, it doesnt mean you'll succeed, that is a more realistic view of your 'choice', RFs statement was about quitting a 'sweat shop' not dreams of going to work in one which in many cases is quite easy

You say that as if it means something. Do you claim that your own statement about the obligations of business is not opinion?

Legal obligations is the only obligations that is binding, which is essentially the only obligation that means a thing in reality. You can argue ethics all you want and all you'll get is a subjective debate. The law is the law and you know what you're going to get every time.

Only as long as consumers put up with it. Are you saying that a boycott could not affect a company without a change in the law?

Certainly not a boycott of Wal-Mart.

I'm not talking about Wal-Mart. I'm talking hypothetically about businesses in general. If consumers hold companies to certain ethical standards, and abstain from doing business with those who don't live up to them, will it have an effect?

There is a higher calling than just following the law. Without ethical standards, there would be no law in the first place. ALL people deserve to be treated with dignity, whether by other individuals or by collective entities like corporations. Profit is no excuse for being an asshole.

agreed. wal-mart is associated with tons of multi-million dollar businesses and could survive a nuclear holocaust because of the funding and support it gets from Big Business.

and here in Los Angeles, the entire city of Van Nuys revolves around Wal-Mart, and the only clothes anybody in that city owns are from that store. Van Nuys is also commonly known as the porn capital of the country. there's no way Wal-Mart could go down, much like the armored shell of a cockroach ... actually, they're basically the same. I wonder if Wal-Mart directly evolved from cockroaches at some point in history ...

Hypothetically, a boycott of an absolutely enormous scale could have some effect. Unfortunately for protesters, the target market for almost all of companies that are committing these apparently awful practices do not include the demographics of average protesters.

So, hypothetically, yes. In practice or reality? Hell no.

Maybe if the company is small or caters mostly to young adults who are politically minded it would do some good. Either that or the grievance was so atrocious that it deeply offended the general public. Otherwise, it would be just as effective as the "don't buy gas on such-and-such date" boycotts.
