Panaeolus subbalteatus I presume?

Habitat: 8 month old, richly fertilized bermuda sod in a landscaped area. Northeast Georgia USA.

Caps: 2-3 cm. in the mature speciments, pinky tip sized in the smaller ones. Campanulate, some also a bit umbonate. Cap is dry and smooth. Caramel colored in the center, with a darker brown zone near the edge. Two of the more mature specimens which were a bit dried had caps that were completely light brown. The edges of some caps are nearly inrolled, but just barely so.

Gills: Brown with whitish edges, close, and attached to the stem. Paler tan to brown in the younger specimens. The gills do not hang lower than the cap edge in any specimen.

Stem: Thin but sturdy, reddish brown, more lightly colored near the cap. Stems are grooved with parallel grooves running up the stem, and then twisting around it towards the top. Stem is pretty much hollow, and kind of fibery when broken. Mycelia evident at base.

Smell and Taste: Mushroomy
Bruising: None

Spore print: Blacker than Jerry Falwell's evil soul

The ones in your yard are more likely Paneolina foenisecii. This is why a spore print is so important. There are also some details in my description that are characteristic of subbs but note of foens.

here by eifelrev1, and posted here earlier, are the bottom of caps of Panaeolus subbalteatus.


This look is very distinct to the species.
They usually have a three quarter circle in shape and then go straight.

This is a perfect example of the bottoms of the caps form underneath.

Thanks for the info mjshroomer, and nice pics. Very much similar to the shape of the one I chose to photograph from underneath, yes?

edit: Actually, looking at the rest of them, they nearly all have the shape you describe. Especially the younger ones. Almost like a triangle with two of the edges kind of rounded, and the base straight. This is a critical bit of info that I bet goes unnoticed much of the time. Thanks mjshroomer.

Nope. They are in a large greenspace just outside the door of the building I work in. And I'm nutty enough (in my colleague's eyes) that no one would think to ask me any questions.

Nice!!  I will be curious to hear how the potency is!

Most people only find a couple subbs at a time- not enough for appreciable effects, and unfortunately, drying seems to render them very weak.  So, luckily for you, with this large collection, you will be able to report back!  :wink:

So how do they compare to cubes? Just wondering. Do they loose much potency if dried for later use?

If i remember right i picked a bunch and when they dried they turned to dark brown stringy things and didn't smell appetizing at all.

Wait, potency? You mean... these are some of them magical mushrooms? Boomers? Too bad, I threw the 20.1 wet grams in the front yard. But then I did have a dream that someone made a tea with hot but not boiling water in a press-style bodum teapot. They drank two pressings worth. The effects, as described to me in my dream by tom cruise and xenu, were mild but pleasant. Slight euphoria, increased awareness of detail and color, amazing sounds when listening to music, slight breathing of walls and countertops, profound relaxation, and a very clear mind. No doubt that if they were eaten the effects, as described to me in a dream, would have been much greater.

Good shit. I keep my subbs dried in a jar when i cant make popsicles out of em. you should really try it.
