Help with Magic Bags-Dr bluethumbs
    #691962 - 06/21/02 06:00 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I ordered two magic bags from Dr. Bluethumb. On these bags there is a small rye berry where the first mycelium colonization takes place. I let the rye berry bag fully colonize then i droped the rye berries onto the compost. I shook the bag after like 12 days to help spread the myceluim, but it wont spread to the compost! It just keeps growing on the rye berries and wont spread. I am giving heat now from a heat pad to see if it will speed things. Why wont it spread to the compost? It is a B+ strain. I am worried the heat pad will dry out the compost though. What should i do? thanx

Your compost is too wet. I had the same problem last week and now all is fine. Also, you should prolly incubate at room temp because the compost will put out a lot of heat on its own.

I had the same thing happen.....only it took way too long and the berries went from white mycellium to BRIGHT pink funk.
I read up on this contam and it seems it could cause spinal menengitus(sp?)......Then all these little bugs came out of it.....creepy.

Yeah you wont need to give it heat...the compost will keep it warm enough.

1) B+ is a slow colonizer
2) Yes if the compost is too wet, it will not grow. It should just be damp or moist whatever you feel would be not too drenched nor bone dry.
3) Make sure everything is dark.
4) YOu probably wont need to shake it because you want your compost to be realitivly packed. Not all loose or else it will create open spots and thats not wanted.

How long has it been? The berries should have started to colonize the compost within a few days at least.

The rye berries have been sitting in the compost for over 12 days!
