Vegtables and Herbs that do well in containers???

I might not be in the same place by the end of the summer. So I'm going to get into container gardening this year.

I've been poking around online but would love some advice.

What grows well in containers. Keep in mind I can buy big containers if I need to, so don't rule out plants with big root systems, unless they do much better in the ground.

Still it would be cool if I could save some cash on supplies(i.e Soil, verm etc) and be really productive with small pots.

All herbs do well, but for truely great results chillis are hard to beat in containers.

You can buy cherry tomato seeds that grow into small plants quick, i can't remember exactly what they were called but it said on the packet "for hanging baskets and containers".
They were cool, never reached more than 9/10 inches in height and they hung over the sides..

If you just want herbs most of them will grow well in containers,, take your pick.

You can grow pretty much what you want in containers, some good
crops are

Carrots : these work well in deep containers of loose, fine soil, kept over 22"
off the ground to keep carrot root flys at bay, as the little fuckers dont fly higher
than 22" off the ground. (still plenty of season left for these)

Potatoes : again in a deep container, and you plat shallow, then earth up the stems
once there a few inches above the surface, and just keep earthing up.(might be a little
late in the season though)

Dwarf french beans (bush beans) : Real nice compact little plants, that produce a shit
load of crops, and are pick and come again (plenty of season left for these)

salad crops : Rocket, lettuce, spinach and leaf beets (plenty of season left for these)

That should keep you busy for now :wink:

Radish are good and easy to grow too.

Greens are some of my favorites though, they taste so much better home grown.
A good perpetual spinach is always a winner, it'll keep you going for most of the year.
Just pick as needed and it'll grow back in no time.

You can buy packets of seeds with different herbs in one pack. Chives, basil, oregano ect.
Coriander's good to grow but they can get quite high.
If you let them seed, you can save the seeds and use them all year round.
Chillies are great for storing too.

Marjoram goes well in many tomato sauces..

Shit i wish i'd put more effort in this year,, there's still time left though..
I may end up using containers as the green house is getting too hot for alot of things and i don't have any space left in the garden.

I've heard of corn being grown in containers.
