Depending on what kind of sound you're looking (hearing?) for  it'd change.

For some rock solo sound distortion and a distorted amp will be more than enough, but if you want some Gilmouresque sounds a stomp pedal might do, et cetera.

What is your style?

BTW, no matter what kind of music you play when talking about compressors you always want the better quality possible, because bad components let a lot of noise pass thru them and since a compressor makes quiet sounds sound louder... you'll hear a lot of noise whenever you play with it turned on!

As far as my personal preference, disregarding personal/musical styles, I like to compress my guitar with a little bit of tube distortion and control my playing dynamics when I'm playing live.

In the studio I always use a little bit (sometimes a lot) of compression, but usually from plugins so the tone isn't as colored, which might be something you actually want from a stomp pedal

Well, Im not sure on my style per-say. I play alot of metal but when I play clean I want to play as clean as possible, so how well a pedal sounds when playing "clean" or not-didstorted is very important to me.
but I guess Im looking for something that I can use for many different styles and still sound good...
And yea I thought with sufficient distortion I wouldnt need a sustain pedal but it just doesnt seem to cut it, its like its missing that extra edge which I think I can get with some extra sustain.

Yea this is what I want to know! Which are some good pedals that are considered "better"?

sometimes a little less distortion can sound extra 'fat'
a compressor will do your distorted and clean sounds good. I have a compressor integrated in my distortion pedal so I only use it for distortion, which is my main sound. I don't use a lot of compression, but I notice that some of it will give your sound more power, so that would benefit your metal sound too.

what kind of clean sound are you looking for, Opeth like maybe? I think their clean sound is low on mid frequencies and boosted on low and high frequencies which gives it that very clean eerie sound.
To play super-clean you want to set your amp so that it doesn't distort (low or no gain). Still your humbucker pickups will distort the sound a little if you hit the strings hard, but when you play softer you should be fine.

the best you can do is go to a store and try some pedals with your own guitar and similar amp and then decide what you like best. Or check out the manufacturers website, maybe they have samples with/without compressor pedal.

I don't know which pedal is best so I can't tell..

ps some reviews on harmonycentral can be helpfull

If you absolutrely want the BEST pedals in the market (not counting custom works) this is the best place:

www.analogman.com

Their pedals are amazing and their service is just THE best.
Personally I think the compROSSor is the best compresor there is, but the DynaComp is prety famous for sounding great, as are the boss c-2 and nowadays the c-3 which I reckon is not as good unfortunately.

BTW, I'd check out every compressor by playing clean more than distorted, any compressor will sound good with distortion before/after it, but when you're playing clean every noise and detail can be heard. Always look for the weakest link in your audio signal and test it the most.

I buy EXCLUSIVELY from them, no-one else treats me like Mike and the products are the best bar none.

In fact when my album is published I'll put a note on it thanking mike for helping me get my sound.

I used to have a Boss CS-3 compression sustainer. I play alot of metal and found that while it was a very good pedal, I had very little use for it. Mainly because I don't use compression or sustain very much if at all, maybe for a little boost for solos.

can't go wrong with Boss pedals

just go to a music store, try a few, ask a bunch of questions.

hell, you should make best friends at the local music store anyway....
