Coco Growers

please post up some of your experiences with coco as a substrate.

Coco has some very unique properties, and i would like to here about others experiences.


A few things ive read.



coco should be flushed very well. Optimally it should be flushed with calmag to help release extra K.

calmag should always be used with coco.

the cation properties of coco allow it to deliver better deliver nutes to the root zone.

coco can be treated like soil, or watered more frequently (and cut with perlite, etc) like a hydro setup.




Anybody care to add there thoughts/affirm my readings?

straight coco vs coco/perlite mix specifically ?

Also, what differences would using coir with vermiculite instead of perlite have?

vermiculite holds more water than perlite, and if anything, the perlite in the mix, is for arration, not water retention.


That coco is suppose to be pretty decent. It claims to be long fibers

I've never used calmag and never seen any need too. I also use the cheapest coco blocks I can find, just make sure they don't contain slow release ferts.

I find that straight coco has a tendency to become water logged so perlite helps with aeration and drainage. I also put an inch or two of clay balls in the bottom of my pots to further increase the aeration and drainage.

I've found that coco needs to be flushed with straight PH corrected water once every two weeks or so to prevent salt build up. If you don't flush like this you'll notice salts building up around the drain holes in your pots.

I've written a pictorial tek on cleaning coco/perlite so it can be reused, Ythan has it and it'll be on the Growery when the site is up and running.

I've been using basically the same coco/perlite for the last three years, I just add a bit more coco/perlite each time around to replace the small amount that is lost during cleaning.

Flushing is importance(hold salts good) and not letting it dry out is very important.

I understand all the basics, im just looking for any growers first hand wisdom.

Coco is pretty adaptable to different styles of growing.

perlite/coco ratio? about p30/c70 to p40/c60
how did you water? (hand, automated,etc) hand watered, though I used drippers for awhile then went back to hand watering.
what ferts? Canna and nothing else.


I like to let my coco dry out between watering. The idea that you shouldn't has no factual basis.

why did you give up on the drippers?


Im having a hard time getting them to flow evenly.


I need some sort of manifold; something better than my linking of a bunch of T and X pieces, that I got in a starter kit.  As of right now, im flooding a table almost to the top of their containers, because of the inconsistent drippers.

I'll be at my local gardening center on friday to pick up a few items that were out of stock, I'll figure something out by then. :bongload:

For the same reasons as you, It's too hard to get the flow rates right, I was using run to waste and having 5 gallons of expensive nutes lost is not good practice.

Also, I like to be able to move my plants around so I can prune, tie down, check for pests etc. That's impossible when they're all hooked up to plumbing.

Also, I use quite large containers usually so I only need to water every three or four days, making an automated system nothing more than a complicated waste of time.

Hand watering > drippers.
