            First, as you know, **** has announced the establishment of a new emergency notification system.  Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to provide their individual cell phone information to ensure that they receive future text message notices in the case of an emergency.  A test of the system will occur on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, so please be sure to provide the information in advance, at ****.

On Tuesday, May 1, **** tested the Emergency Mobile Phone Alert  System on all **** campuses. We were successful in sending all  of the messages - at a rate of over 14,000 messages in 5 minutes, exceeding our expectations.

Through this test, we learned that some mobile cell phone services have installed filters that either stop or limit the number of text messages that they will receive from a single sender at one time. We are working with these companies to bypass those filters for our emergency text-messaging program.

Some people who registered to receive the notification discovered that
they do not have text messaging as a service on their cell phones, and others discovered that they did not know how to retrieve text messages sent to them.

The Emergency Mobile Phone Text Messaging Alert system is one of multiple methods **** uses to communicate with students, faculty, and staff in emergencies. Other forms of communication include emails, alert messages at bus stops and student centers, radio, websites, telephone information centers, and personal contact.

We are planning an additional test of the text alert system at a future date.

For the record, I provided my information and tested it. Nothing. They said to switch Cingular to AT&T and test again. So I did. Still nothing. Emergency Mobile Phone Alert seems to work perfectly
