Anyone ever worked for a psychiatric hospital?

Next year, as a freshman in college, I'm planning on working at either a psychiatric hospital or for a crisis hotline. My goal is to work in mental health as a profession, so I'm trying to find some good work experience while in college that I can put on a grad school resume.

So, have any of you worked for a crisis hotline or for a psychiatric hospital? What'd you think? What'd you learn from the experience?

You're probably going to be working as just a regular staff person if you go and work for a psychiatric hospital. That entails taking the people on the ward to the cafeteria, running groups, waking them in the morning and putting them down for the night, the sort of thing. I think you're also supposed to be able to restrain them if needed.

Honestly, that job sucks. Most places require you to work overtime as well. It's not one that's good to try and hold while you're in school.

The crisis hotline thing is not usually a paying job, it's volunteer only. Those do look really good on grad school applications though, so it's a toss-up.

Thanks! Yeah, my mom is a nurse and she told me working at a psychiatric hospital wouldn't be too glamorous. I think I'll seek out a job for a crisis hotline. Are crisis hotline jobs difficult to get?
