Customers Demand Dell Offer XP Again Instead Of Vista
    #6813867 -

Responding to customer demand Dell has restarted selling new PCs with Windows XP installed on them.

The decision reverses a policy begun in January that meant Windows Vista was the only operating system available on almost all new home machines.

The change came after Dell's feedback site was swamped with calls for the return of the venerable software.

Now customers can opt for the Home or Professional version of XP on six models of Dell machines.

Customer clamour

The four consumer versions of Windows Vista went on sale on 30 January and since then many PC makers have sold most of their machines with the software pre-loaded.

Since January Dell has been gradually phasing out the XP option on new PCs. By March Dell only sold two models in its extensive range with the XP operating system installed.

Dell is currently the second-largest PC seller in the world and has a 15.2% share of the overall PC market.

Dell changed the policy in response to pleas posted on its Ideastorm website which invites customers to post suggestions about how the PC maker can meet their needs.

The suggestion saying "Don't eliminate XP just yet" got almost 11,000 votes. In response Dell said it would offer the operating system on four models of Inspiron notebooks and two Dimension desktop PCs.

"This is really odd," said Michael Silver, research vice president at analysts Gartner. "On new PCs, consumers usually do want the latest and greatest."

Other analysts speculated that the reason consumers were keen on XP was because it was familiar and it worked well with many of the digital peripherals they owned.

In response Microsoft said that Dell was responding to a "small minority" of customers who had a very "specific" request.

It is not clear how long Dell will be able to keep its offer to install XP going. From the end of January 2008 PC makers will no longer be able to buy new licences for the operating system.

What are the problems people are having with Vista?

I built my own computer over a year ago, installed XP, and haven't had a problem since. XP imo is a great OS. I understand the need for bigger and better, but what exactly is it that Vista has to offer? More media power? XP plays all the videos, dvds, music and other shit I want it to play...

I didn't like the way it was set up. MS was trying way too hard to make it "user friendly."

Being user friendly isn't a bad thing, but they made it waaaay over the top. It annoyed me.

It does look awesome though, they took all the best things about beryl and compiz and added them to aero.

When I would turn a setting off, I would get pop ups giving me a warning, with a big red X saying there was a problem, and click here to turn it back on.

Damn it! I just turned you off! Stay off!

Exactly.  I hate the big shiny blobs of buttons on the mac, and any other OS for that matter.  Even on XP I use windows classic mode.

The 1 pixel thick button border relief is enough 3D for me, thanks.

Vista lasted 2 days on my new laptop before I installed debian.

Microsoft is so full of shit, as Suess pointed out. I have been hearing from a MAJORITY of new Vista users that they are having problems of SOME kind. Maybe they aren't all having the same SPECIFIC problem, as Microsoft is quick to point out, but they are still ALL having problems!

Well, yeah. It's a brand new operating system. Why do you think XP has two service packs?

And a third one on the way. What makes it being a brand new operating system, full of bugs, that Microsoft claims is very much not, that should be installed on ALL new systems?

New versions of operating systems should be installed on FEW systems. As they become more stable, they should be rolled out to the rest of the systems.

I'm a critic of their overall competence, but even I don't think they're unaware of the situation. They're just spinning the news... as much as is possible.

I see lots of reports of reasons why Vista isn't worth the money yet... hence why I don't plan on buying it for quite a while yet. (Although when I rebuild my computer I may have to... replacing everything except the hard-drives isn't exactly something XP is tolerant of.)

I disagree.  The way they do it now, they get their product testing done by millions of people for free...

Actually, not free, people pay hundreds of dollars to "test" for them...

And what is GOOD about that? That was the nature of my question and you did not answer it. It is NOT a GOOD thing to deploy untested OSes on most computers. Yes, MS benefits, quite a bit, but most of us don't work for MS and would rather have some consumer benefits.

Not really... they hurt their long term credibility with customers. How many people know, and hate, the blue screen of death. Microsoft was so embarrassed by it that in Windows XP they flash it on the screen so fast you barely see it. The only reason Microshit can get by releasing such buggy software is because of their monopoly.

amen. i also think XP is a great OS (especially pre SP2)

the vista being shipped on the new dells wasn't even a true 64bit version anyways, so there isn't a point in getting vista other than the bells and whistles, and not having any of your externals work.

my friend bought a new dell with the printer and everything right from the website - the computer worked and everything, but vista wouldnt even recognize half the peripherals sent, including the printer. they never even checked to see if the DELL printer would work with vista! hah.

Pre SP2? Why?

XP SP2 is great. I've gotta jack a disk from work so I can replace Vista.
