ATI Catalyst and ATITool users... Consider yourself warned.
    #6814950 -

If you use ATI Catalyst drivers for your ATI graphics card, the newest driver update is available on the ATI website.

Now, if you also use ATITool to overclock your GPU, then there is reason to be concerned with this latest update from AMD/ATI.

After installing the latest drivers, I was immediately alarmed by the unacceptable rise in GPU tempurature. Normally, my GPU sits around 40-42c when ambient temps are cool and normal. After installing the new drivers, my GPU was reporting temps of 60-65c... AT IDLE, with ambient temps the same when the GPU was around 40-42.

That amount of tempurature increase, with stock speeds is not acceptable in any form, fashion, shape or obtuse angle. Under load, your GPU can rise up 10, 20.. even 25c from its normal idle temps. Depending on if your GPU is overclocked or not, it could go drastically higher. So a starting level of 60c, plus a load temp of an extra 25c, would have brought my GPU temps to around 85-90c. Almost scarry.

I opened the hood to see that my GPU fan was NOT SPINNNING AT ALL. Bad Bad Bad. I opened up ATITool and seen that for some reason, ATITool had my fan set at ZERO PERECT a.k.a 0%

Resetting the fan percentage to 100% immediately turned the fan on, and dropped my temps back down to 40c.

I have taken the time to do a little research, and it seems that this problem is happening to other people to, so its not an isolated incident.. if you use ATI and ATITool, then you needa check shit out.

morel of the story is, if you use ATITool, and you stumble upon the new 7.4 driver package, then you need to double check your fan settings in ATITool, wouldnt want to burn up that GPU.

Just thought this may be helpful to a few shroomerites who have ATI cards and ATITool to tweak em.

peace ya'll.

I've heard AMD has done nothing good with the drivers since the merge. I guess this proves that point. =\
