ATI releases X800 PRO and X800 XT Platinum Edition
    #2637651 - 05/04/04 06:39 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

A few weeks ago Nvidia released the 6800(posted by daba), which whipped the ATI 9800XT. Now they've released the X800 series which is about neck and neck to the the Nvidia 6800.

Actually, the X800XT Platinum Ed. handily defeats any 6800. The R420/X800 series, I believe will be either AGP or PCI-X. Either way, it supposedly got 13,000+ 3DMARK's (3DMARK03 of course).

Also, the X800XT will feature 16 pixel pipelines and will run about $500. The X800Pro will run about $400 with 12 pixel pipelines. Keep in mind the highest card availible out in the market right now to average users is the 9800XT which only has 8 pixel pipelines.

There will be no X800 NP version, just X800SE, X800Pro, and X800XT. These also feature only 1 molex connector (unlike the 6800series, which require 2, and therefore a recommended 480Watt PSU). These will go on sale sometime in June. The X800 Pro will be released first, and the X800XT a month later.

The 6800 is not availible in retail stores yet either. However, you can purchase one at an extremely ridiculous price over at AlienWare.

For those of you who don't know, these graphics cards are a huge leap in technology. A standard to go by is 3DMARK03 (not to be confused with the older version, 3dMark01). The average laptop will get 2000 3dMarks03, the average desktop computer will get around 4000 (decent build), my somewhat high-end computer with an overclocked Radeon 9800 Pro gets 6400 3dMarks03.

To give you a taste, the Nvidia 6800 Ultra gets approximately 10,000 3DMarks03, and as I already stated the unofficial results for the X800XT is 13,000. The big feature about these new cards is its ability to maintain a commanding 25-50% FPS rate over the older gen (Nvidia 5950 Ultra and Radeon 9800XT) especially at 1600x1200 resolution. Check out the review on the 6800 Ultra at www.tomshardware.com. The reviews for the X800XT will be out soon as well.

Oddly enough, the X800XT will look amazingly similiar to its 9800XT predecessor:

If you're interested in what the 6800 will look like, I have several pictures of it on the 6800 thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=2570194&page=2&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

Here are some leaked benchmarks:

The whole list of them can be found here:
http://www.computerbase.de/forum/showthread.php?p=646488#post646488

Edit: Whoops! I didn't see that tomshardware already reviewed it. You can just read that rather than my crummy, spur-of-the-moment comments.

Unfortunately for Nvidia, their newest top-of-the-line model, 6800 Ultra Extreme Ed. is still not good enough to beat X800XT Platinum Ed.

ATI once again pushes Nvidia into the underdog position:

Yeah, i would like to get my hands on one of those. I'm an ATI junkie since i bought my Radeon DDR 4 years ago. Now i have a powercolor 9800SE on a 256bit 9700 PCB softmoded (4 extra pipelines) to a 9800 PRO, so my rig goes up to 5800 points in 3DMark03 and 38000 in Aquamark, not too bad for 200 EUR videocard bought in December last year.
Anyway, if you want to play 1600x1200, 8x AA, 16x aniso, go for the X800 XT, the 6800 eats its dust !!!
Check www.rage3d.com for the latest links and news about the whole issue. You might find me from time to time, somewhere in the linux forum

Sadly nearly none of you will use a decent percentage of the power of the cards you bought for $500.

I push my 9800Pro to 9800XT speeds and above... and does it show in UT2K4!

Psst... my BB Ati 9800 Pro cost me $176 new . Just gotta look for the right deal.

ALL YOU RADEON OWNERS: I wholeheartedly suggest you purchase the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer Rev. 2 and BGA Copper ramsinks at www.svc.com for only $20. It brought my 9800Pro from 70C to around 25-35C(idle). Talk about improvement . No I'm not an affiliate.

Here's some more pictures:

The heatsink is silent. Huge though!

HIS ATI Radeon X800 Pro IceQ 2 (basically an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer, third generation [not revision 3]).

Edit: Looks like you won't need any more BGA ramsinks! That's a big plus
