the temperature here can drop below -40c in the winter.

there ain't a columnar in existance that will tolerate less than -10 for more than a brief encounter

theres a few other opuntias that survive here but are introduced.

O. polycantha is SAID to live here naturally, but if so, its extremely rare.

the way the desert is getting consumed by development, its nice to have these high, undevelopable plots, but the best deset USED to be in the valleys.

all swallowed up by orchards and vinyards

its UNLIKELY to drop below -40 BTW.
this year was unusually cold and i think -30 was the lowest.

a normal daytime low for winter here would be more like -10

funny observation, the big scorpion has a little blue-grey fleck near its stinger.  thats a poppyseed

all i had to collect them in was my "johnny" bag of poppyseeds.

theres really little difference between the climate here and that of mid to east washington state or mid to east oregon.

meanwhile just a hop over some mountains and youve got the coast that stays much more humid and mild over winter.  but doesn't get anywhere near the summer heat of the desert out here.

do you keep arachnids? or just play with the wildlife?

It would be neat to start a cold hardy cacti garden. I have thought about doing this before, and it seems like a cool project. There are many opuntia that can survive the cold you have, along with echinocereus, pediocactus, agave, and yucca.

took some feild-herping swedes (from another forum) out thru the desert yesterday.  found lots of snakes, scorpions, and other interesting things.  they took hundreds of photos, i only took a few.  we found gopher snakes, scorpions, black widows, bighorn sheep, lots of fowl, and a dead bobcat as well. ill post those pics when they send me some.

some nice pictographs

Crotalus oreganus oreganus
(northern pacific rattlesnake)
a bit older than the last one. same size tho. i HUGE and wily one with brilliant patterns was to quick to manupilate for a photo.  some lady came over and got all pissed at us for manupulating snakes in protected areas withought  a permit.  I beleive she was probably more worried we were collecting.  the snake hooks were a bit of a point..  but the $1000s in photo equipment made our explaination beleivable at least.  even so, my wifes grandfather was the one who donated the land and started the reserve.  her cousin is the grounds keeper. SOOOOO, I'm pretty sure I'm ok to show a couple swedes around who drove for days to see some snakes, and get some good pics.

pacific treefrog
(Pseudocris regalia)
a male, found in a shady patch of Oregon grape.  Diddn't expect to find these in the dryest desert patch in canada.

yellow bellied racer
(coluber constrictor)
found a few of these.  smelly things
