poppies in the desert...
    #2756322 - 06/02/04 11:54 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Does anyone know if I can safely plant poppies in the summer in the arizona desert? I know they overall like cold but tons of people grow them here and I am looking more for decoration then for the pods. Its already averaging over 100 during the day and the spots they would be are only direct sun for maybe 5 to 6 hours a day.

thanks!

They may sprout to be rosettes then they'll die off from the heat, even with aggressive watering.

Your best bet is to go for a fall planting.

not as seedlings / rosettes...

if they were well established they'd be fine now in the weather, they probably already have pods for those that already planted them at the early spring or over wintered them as rosettes, in arizona at least.

f'in 100n in the shade right now.  i am currently in Az and its pretty hot.  poppies will definatly grow here, maybe you should plant them indoors and then transplant them when they are large enough?

im not a transplant expert just a thought.

peace
