LED array for FC?
    #6790217 -

i am preparing a FC for BRF cakes and was wondering if a small array of blue LEDs would be an effective light source. i know that light serves beneficial for pin stimulation and direction of growth. since the fruiting body's are not photosynthetic, do they require/prefer a certain color temperature of light? considering they prefer a lower temp during fruiting i would think using a led array would rid any chances of over heating, less clutter in and around the FC, and less chances of being discovered from light bleed out. it would probably be overkill but i already have gone as far as installing a 12v fan for automated FAE , so i probably already have over done it.

White colored elwire might do the trick!

If you use LED's, get full spectrum, which will appear white to your eyes. Mushrooms don't want or need a blue mood light. It will be interesting to see how jackals EL wire works out. The color temperature seems in the right range(if not a bit too high even), but I'm not yet convinced the intensity is there. A $6 fluorescent fixture with a cool white or natural daylight tube inserted is a proved lighting method that will deliver excellent pinsets. Bright, high frequency light, with as little a heat signature as you can get it preferred.

You basically want a strong, direct light source which isn't in the ultraviolet range. A regular incandescent bulb is fine for this, if possible - it sounds like you're going to need a lot of LEDs to kick out the same amount of lumens. I wouldn't worry so much about heat from the bulb - if it doesn't go over 75F, it won't interfere with fruiting.

Make very sure that that fan doesn't cause your fruiting chamber to dry out.

Once again, I'm confused. I thought red light was preferable?

damn, i like those lights. the probably would do the trick but unfortunately they do even more to my bank account. they would probably work even better as a light for growing macro-algae in my refugium. say they have about the same color temp and output as my current lights. right on

thanks

i have 8w power compact that i will probably end up using, but that leads my to the same reason i swaped it out for LED lighting for improved tempereature stability with my nano tank.

heres what i recommend. i got everything for under $16

red light is at the lower end of the spectrum (~3000K i think) what u want is 6500K which is considered blue. the color of the light itself isnt blue, plain old white...just really really bright.

temperature isnt a problem. i can leave mine on for an hour and the bulb wont even be warm. ive tested for temperature change using a digital and analog thermometer in my closet and the temps didnt even go up 1 degree.

Above is the full spec (PDF format) for the white elwire. As far as heat, it does not seem to put out any significant heat at all.

Red light, as is produced by incandescents is the absolute worst possible choice. The light farva86 posted is about the best bang for the buck.

I just read that pdf on the light wire. I'm wondering what you're using for a power supply? You need to be in the 400 to 4,000 hz range to get the right color temperature, and standard house current is 50 to 60 hz. It seems to be a very expensive method for a small amount of light. In addition, you need a high frequency power supply which is an added expense.

right on, i'll stear twards lighting with a yellow or 6500k output. i should of known just cuase i use the same LEDs for the sole purpose that the "night crew" of my reef tank are unable to see that specturm, there fore allowing me to view them. thanks for your help.

The elwire kit comes with an inverter that runs off of a high power 120VAC to 12VDC converter and that one can adjust the voltage and frequency, which adjusts the elwire parameters (http://www.elbestbuy.com/im10050100feet.html). The cost of the elwire kit was in the noise relative to the investments already incurred, but I know that is no excuse.

Currently, the greenhouse is in a custom made cover made of black plastic bags and with the elwire lighting inside for stealthiness.

Beside light temperature, how important is the wattage/intensity of the light being usedf? Is there any such thing as "overdoing it"?

Not if you don't produce excess heat. That's the second reason besides color temperature that makes incandescent lighting a poor choice.

Thanks for the info Jackal. I was wondering about that. Keep us posted how they do.

Sorry coming to this discussion late...
So what you are saying is that mushrooms dont "want" the blue (to our eyes) light sources? I read somewhere a while ago and i cant remember where that photo sensitive mushrooms responded to light in the 400-450 nanometer wavelength, and where less responsive to other light sources. Naturally this could be bogus info and i may have remembered wrong, but previously a associate of mine had a FC that used blue cold-cathode tubes for light. He grew Equadors and definatly depending on where the trays where the mushrooms bent to reach towards the light. However the FC was semi-transparent so natural light was present to some degree. Previous to this he had a ghetto tub with a small tray in it and its only source of light was blue led lights and mushrooms responded to that. Blue Led lights i think have practically only the 400 range nm wavelengths so we thought they where better than white. However in recent history we have had trouble with pinning and are refining our methods.

I'm using a daylight flurescent bulb in house socket and all my little buddies are bending toward the bulb. Since it's a point source this makes it more pronounced I think.

Blue light is a common misconception. What you want is to mimic daylight and if possible to go towards the blue end of the spectrum. A 6500k light will look white with a bluish (subtle) reflection on white surfaces.

I have used a blue peice of elwire. The 5 mm one with a non-adjustable inverter. It seems to be working ok. I am wanting light my freezer eventually. Thats why I got it. Its flexible without heat, and I know that it works. I just want to go the best way possible since I have spent so much time on the freezer already. More info is requested. I will need to consult my greenhouse lighting manuals as well.
